Of course short CBs can do well. My thing is a 6' 5 CB like Tyrone Mings is a more surefire bet than a 6' 1 CB are like Soyuncu or Sokratis.
Note that I used "more" as it's not a guarantee of course!
I do agree a substantial height advantage makes winning aerial battles in the Premier League easier, but I also think strength is a vital factor and Upamecano is built like a bull. Sol Campbell, for example, is at most inch taller than Koscielny, I even have a sneaking suspicion Sol is actually only 6'1" but is incorrectly listed as 6'2", but he also had probably 2 stone on our former Frenchman--and the difference between the two on high balls was night and day.
There's also obviously more to defending in the Premier League than winning headers, and being so tall comes with it's downsides. I like Mings a lot and think he has rare agility for a guy so tall, as well as being very fast, very aggressive and good on the ball, but Upamecano looks like one of the best front foot defenders I've seen emerge for quite some time. That power, speed and agility allied to an ability to read the game is like a cheat code player when they're in a good team.
I think we should sign them both!
