I think he’s right to a large degree, particularly in relation to the more casual viewer as Claud says. I’d argue most of those those rave about him on Twitter have probably never seen him play live. Just like how everyone decided Kluivert Jr is amazing based on a 3 min clip showing his hat trick. I was amazed when one of my United supporting friends, who’d been raving about Savic for months and advocating signing him, turned around and expressed dissapoinent after watching him live at the World Cup for the first time.

What’s embarrassing about the article is that the Chief Sports Writer of a major national newspaper has admitted to never having bothered to watch one of the hottest prospects around, and displayed a very casual attitude towards watching football. Tells you everything wrong with football “journalism”

I find a lot of English football writers are very insular. They get wrapped up in the Premier League and know very little about what is happening beyond. From an economics standpoint, it makes sense. The league is extraordinarily popular. But it also means I don't trust them to speak with authority when they rank their players against foreign players (e.g., Deli Alli is world class) or when they have to discuss foreign transfer prospects.

Very few top journalists actively take an active interest in foreign players - e.g., Marcotti, Richardson.

The nature of their job is why I'd expect them to come across as insular. I think journalists from Spain and Italy would primarily focus on their domestic leagues and their national team (including U21s) as well. They may watch games from home, but generally will be at matches, interviewing before and after matches, as well as wining and dining other football people on non match days. Also I would imagine they would be expected to follow the Championship as well. What some papers have done is to bring in journalists who are well versed in other leagues to provide their external coverage. There are a few English journalists who do provide a give pretty good insight into foreign leagues such as Tim Vickery, James Horncastle and Andy Brassell. More than the journalists themselves who come across a lot better on programmes like the Sunday Supplement (even if you don't agree with their views), my impression is that a lot of context and variety is lost from having to deliver in mediums where punchy headlines, controversy and big club focused articles are expected for commercial reasons. However is it important for journalists to be so well versed when we are perfectly capable of viewing foreign leagues and players ourselves with everything now available on TV and internet? The important function I believe they serve is (aside from publicity for clubs) is providing the link between us fans and football decisions made by executives etc as they can often obtain information to provide greater, though not necessarily complete, context.

I'm rarely wowed. I guess it's a function of living in a world where most of us have moved from depending on the NY Times and the Independent for all our news, but rather use a variety of more specific blogs and podcasts to serve us our various politics, entertainment and and sports news. It's hard for papers to give breadth, depth and speed across all these topics.
I agree about Vickery, Horncastle and Brassell having depth on Europe and Latin America, but they aren't front and centre

This is definitely true. When we played Milan last year a lot of Italian journalists couldn't name most players in our squad. They knew Özil and Jack, and I think Ramsey was on the pitch back when we beat Napoli half a decade ago so that name sounded familiar too. They knew Wenger too obviously but were pretty oblivious about the rest.

then who are the better options from those we have been 'linked' with
= Pavon, Sarr, Pepe, Lozano, Bailey?

Do we look to make a player + cash deal with MU re Rambo/Martial?

Do we make a loan offer with a fixed price to buy with Barca for Dembele if they want to pursue Pogba?

The winger debate/purchase also seems tied to what we're doing with our fullbacks. In that, Mhiki might be an alright wide player if our fullback is providing the width/final ball. If we're asking our wide player to provide that, working of an AM/CF, then we'll need a different type of player.

Wouldn't mind a more offensive wide forward ahead of Monreal, and start asking him to sit a little more. Ahead of Bellerin we need someone who can control play until he makes his run, while also covering as need be.

So I'm fine with PEA ahead of Monreal but I'd be hesitant to see Lozano and Bellerin on the same flank. Can't comment much on the others, though from match comps Bailey looks ace.

From what I've read Emery used to play with 2 wingers, but they'd come inside into the half spaces in the final 3rd with the FBs overlapping.
The question will be is it still a viable option in the PL, & perhaps more so do we have the quality to do so - not just re the FBs but more about the CMs ability to cover.

My current domino Wish List goes something like this....

Rambo to MU as part of a cash + player deal for Martial,
MU then let Pogba go to Barca,
and we then land Dembele from Barca on loan with a fixed price to buy.

I'd then sell all of Xhaka, Elneny and even Ozil and PEA if that is what it took to make it happen.

Not attainable but belongs on a 'wishlist' - Ceballos. How does Spain keep making these guys. Thiago's midfield days are numbered on national team.

Ceballos is ridiculously good, his ball control is pretty much Messi level. Fuck him and his Francoist garbage views though, genuinely outrageous talent and not a single brain cell to go with it.

Ünder would be the best signing we've made since Henry. Dribbling pace and that retard strength in his midget legs, might go for more than we can pay if he develops the way he is

Turks around my area have all turned into Roma fans overnight 😆 for good reason though to be fair

Ünger would be amazing. He's there for the taking too. Roma will sell anyone for a good fee. Just hawk in on them and grab him and Manolas. Offer them Xhaka and Mustafi in return plus some cash. They'll take the deal.
