I still see Wilshere, Xhaka and Ramsey as being a massive problem there, in terms of both fitness and capability. I think we'd be better off improving midfield even if we had to keep the same defenders for another year. Sort the midfield out and it should help going forwards and backwards.
We have decent, but not outstanding, defenders. If we focus on buying a couple of top class defenders they'd still be playing within a team with structural frailties in front of them. Do it the other way around and square the midfield and it might be more productive in the short term.
Agree with your first paragraph 100%
We're working a tightened budget this summer (unless we win EL). We have the most unathletic group of midfielders in the top 6. An explosive midfielder that can help us to win the ball and feed our frontline accurately will be the best bang for buck signing we could make. Then target a GK, and lastly a CB
Defending is wholistic and we know wenger doesn't place great emphasis on it. Blowing money on defenders would produce diminished returns, and there aren't a great many defenders worth spending big on.
We're heard about svens eye for attacking talent but did he pick up any defensive bargains as well?
