I know we've just bought two strikers, but I'm transferring this from the Serie A thread anyway:

Mauro Icardi just scored four goals on an away pitch, against Sampdoria. Took him 14 minutes to get a hattrick. The backheel finish for his second goal was Henry-levels of filthiness:

Beautiful. We can always get rid of the first striker we bought. He preceded Mislintat and Sanllehi. The ambition on forwards needs to be very high. Imagine Liverpool without that boy Salah this season.

people were a bit down on icardi 2 seasons ago, probably because of the personal/character issues. he always looked a quality player in the few times i've watched him

He has developed a lot in the last two years to be fair, but I also believe that in order to motivate playing like Icardi does you really have to be among the best in the world at what you do. He completed as many passes as he scored goals against Sampdoria, I think. He's the ultimate poacher. That makes him as rare as diamonds in modern football, but also useless for any team that relies on a sole striker who has to get involved in the game.

If Arsenal bought an expensive striker this summer I'd be livid. Just how wrong is it possible to get one's priorities?

I rate Auba highest of the lot, but if Icardi leaves Inter in the next few years it might well be for a new world transfer record. He's had a dry spell since Christmas and still has 22 goals in 24 games.

I like Icardi and think he's improved plenty in the last couple of years, but I'd be willing to bet a lot that he will never be the most expensive player in the world. Worth mentioning that Immobile has two more goals and seven more assists than him.

I was thinking of Coutinho's recent transfer to Barca (I forgot about Neymar to PSG). I don't think Icardi will move either, but I reckon that's somewhere in the region of what he'd cost if he did. No one's going to spend that on a 28 year old Immobile who has already failed in two other countries. Juve might take him back whenever Dybala leaves though.

With Pogba having a miserable time in Manchester under Mourinho I wonder if he could somehow be attainable.

Pogba in a midfield with Ozil doesn't look like a good fit to me. 2 mercurial talents like that in one midfield would be asking for trouble.

yep. iffy mentality as well, despite all his other gifts. not sure what kind of manager would get the best out of him, let alone wenger

I feel a Jardim type who plays fast direct football could certainly get the best out of Pogba, who is not a defensive midfielder, or even a proper box to box midfielder. Pogba wants to be playmaker, and whilst he can be an offensive powerhouse, he doesn’t move off the ball (in my eyes the most important trait for a playmaker) well enough. Pogba can still be a monster in the right system, but you would have to have at least two midfielders around him to do the dirty work, and get him the ball.

Allegri would be another candidate who would tactically get the best out of him. Whilst I don’t like Mourinho, let’s wait and see next year what happens, as right now he seems to have a hold over Woodward, so I expect another midfielder coming in to play next to Matic, potentially freeing Pogba.

One midfielder for me: Saul Niguez, the Atletico man

One of the most talented midfielders I have seen in La Liga this season. A few things that stand out for me

The guy puts in some of the cleanest tackles I've seen, in contrast to Xhaka, including standing tackles. He's also able to turn defense into transition offense very quickly, whether by passing or moving. He has the defender/creator combination that Xhaka has completely failed to provide
Good variety of passing. I've seen a lot of through balls, and when he finds himself out wide, he's even able to whip in good crosses
He has very good ability on the ball. He is able to maneuver out of very tight spaces, including in central midfield to get himself into space, even better than Jack. Just spins out and he's gone
He's strong, but also quite fast. Once he get's going he's a bit like Yaya, can just motor through the midfield, covering lots of ground

Just a very capable all around player. I think he would form a good 1-2 with Ramsey in central midfield if Ramsey can stay healthy. Would be very dynamic old school partnership. Plus he's very young (23) in contrast to options like N'zonzi who is too old given the age profiles of Ozil, Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan, Koscielny, Monreal and Cech.

He just signed a 9 year contract extension with Atletico recently.

That will have been a year ago this summer, with a club that appears to be experiencing financial difficulty. I believe he has a massive buyout clause, but a good offer should tempt them. He's a great talent at a good age.

My summer would be him, someone like Martial and still-to-be named central defender and goalie. And then continue to dump a lot of folks to support these moves.
