Thing with free transfers is that the player ends up getting a significant signing bonus or increased wages. I suspect the total amortized cost (wages + fees) is pretty similar to a "normal" transfer. The difference is that the fees go to the player rather than the team.

I'd go all out for him. The best way to mitigate the loss of Alexis and Ozil is not to look for like for like replacements but to tweak the system and bring in players that could excel in that system IMO. Make the Ozil role obsolete, switch to 3 in midfield with Ramsey being the most attacking of the 3 and Icardi-Laca upfront (arguably a much clinical attack than we have this season).

My wishlist : Icardi, Fabinho, Jorghino

Ideally we'll also bring in a new CB but I can't see us spending so much on new players.

The old super clubs had unofficial agreement not to sign free transfers of each other. This was to stop the players becoming to powerful. With the introduction of so many financially doped clubs agreements like that are now unsustainable.

Get rid of Elneny and Coquelin, sign either Goretzka or Savić. This is the premier league. You need height, legs and power in the middle or else the Man U's in this league would just steamroll your midfield.
