I'm wondering if we should put in an actual bid for Goretzka this winter. Something meaty - 20-30m pounds, which is still value for a player of his quality, and lock him in this winter. This allows them to rebuild immediately. Schalke's equation is to consider whether they can still make Champs League if they sell now, as they lie 3rd in a very competitive race for 2nd-9th - similar to our situation with Ozil/Sanchez. But we should at least tempt them with a juicy offer.

I see rumours that Southampton are interested in Walcott. Add some money and get van Dijk in return. They'd probably love to stop Liverpool from getting him.

Van Dijk and Goretzka on a free in the summer would be massive coups. Both leaders and offer the physical presence we desperately need.

I noticed some wishlisting Ndombele. I'd never heard of him, but he looked a lot like Naby Keita from the clips I watched. Seems like there's decent talent at Lyon at the moment.

There's quite a few players worth a punt at Lyon. They are very impressive with building a squad of young players and being brilliant in attack but shit in defence.

Aouar and Fekir will be superstars, Mariano, Ndombele and Tousart won't be far away.

We missed a trick with Tolisso, as expected he's been impressive for Bayern this season.

Has Fekir recovered after his knee problem? Had quite a serious injury from what I remember.

Ndombele is definitely one to watch. I can see the comparison to Keita but his final ball isn't close to matching his. I'd argue he looks the far bigger prospect defensively though and he's extremely physical for his age and height. He also has the shot power of Adriano anno 2006

He'd fit in perfectly for us, early days but he seems to have everything we need in CM. In a perfect world we'd take all of those war chests that went unspent and hand the cash to Aulas for his whole club, like Clrnc said it's ridiculous how many talents they're scouting and producing these days. In a more realistic world we'd go and sign some of their academy coaches, it would be a very long term investment but it's not like we're focusing on the short term at the moment either

I watched the Shakthar game the other night, and the prospect of picking up Bernard on a free is enticing.

I reckon the type of player Bernard is will always look good in the PL.

I think so too. If we sell Walcott in the January window maybe we should throw whatever cash we get for him at Shakhtar and see what they do. Getting £15 million in the winter must be a lot better than getting nothing in the summer from their perspective.

Doesn't mean he would want to lose out on a bigger signing bonus.

I think where he's going is gonna be a lot more important to him than a sign-on bonus. He'll tripple his wages right away in Premier League too. He could certainly wait, but there's no guarantee that a club of Arsenal's magnitude is willing to sign him in the summer and give him the same opportunities.

Sure, but there must be clubs in contact with him and he's got to have some idea of his prospects if he's willing to run down his contract. I hope we're smart enough to attempt an early pickup, don't get me wrong.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. Technically no one's allowed to talk to him until January, but you'd be naïve to think he hasn't been contacted by some clubs already.

I think him running down his contract is mostly about wanting to get away from Ukraine though. He's been trying for years but they refused to sell him.

Shaktar are in the last 16 of the CL though and, unless things have changed, have a mega rich owner. Is the 15m really worth it?

Depends on whether they think they'll have much of a shot at advancing I guess. I dunno, it's a long shot for the reasons you and Coombs have mentioned, but I think it would be worth trying at least.
