Nah, I agree with Kel. Per was excellent in steadying the ship and bring our defence back to an acceptable level when he joined the club but now he's not really starting material for a title winning club. it's basically what happened to Arteta

He is not an elite CB, but his organizational skills are a bonus which some other CB may not bring. Gabriel cant say two words in english yet.

Mertesacker would boss it at Chelsea alongside Terry.

Yeah Mertesacker may look awkward but he's as good as any other centrebacks the top teams in England have

Really like his leadership but IMO he's another AW bargain signing and not really suited to our style or requirements.

He's tall but has no leap to challenge the ball in the air & no real physical presence so is not really suited to the PL. He has the turn of a super tanker & no recovery so is not suited to play a high line defence, which means the space opens between the lines & requires a DM to cover. His lack of ability on the ball requires a DLP to drop deep in order for us to play out from defence.
That said he's not a bad/poor player just another example of AW's priority to sign opportunistic bargains, resulting in square pegs and a lack to balance as the spine is not fit for purpose.

I kinda like Per, but if we continuously seek to shift our CB forward to the flanks to support our pressing we gotta have somebody with better recovery pace while having at least the same level of skill. Hope Gabriel fits the bill, though I've yet to really see it.

We conceded 13 goals in our last 19 league games. That's half the season, and that coincided with us also fielding our most in form defenders, and Coquelin, pretty much every game. Mertesacker isn't the best CB in the world, but he is also not some sort of liability.

I agree, Mertesacker may not be top tier but he is a very good defender and marshal of the back line.

I do overlook Ozil's start to last season because we really didn't give him much time after a grueling world cup and put him wide too.

Mertesacker didn't start most games for Germany but it's not like he had a break either. Not only that, he also had to partner a greenhorn like Chambers first and then for a long time he had Monreal as a partner with Chambers at right back.

It was but natural that our crisis along with a jaded Mertesacker was never going to do us any good.

Hopefully Di Maria to PSG opens the door for one of Cavani/Ibra to move this summer. I'd prefer Ibra.

In an ideal world, PSG move Cavani to the middle and offload Ibra. We give the big man a three year contract, win everything under the sun with him and allow him a happy retirement in sunny Los Angeles. BOOM!
