I'd definitely still take El Shaarawy. He's the sort of talent who's worth gambling on. The smart thing to do would be to sign him when his stock is low, because he's a potential >£40 million player when he's at the top of his game. There's always the risk he never gets over the injury problems of course, but that's the compromise.

He scored a nice brace against Torino the other day for what it's worth.

I like him as a striker; he shoots well with both feet, he is good in the air, he has great instincts for where the ball will fall, he is strong, and fast for a player of his size. Two summers ago, or even last summer, was the time to get him IMO. He still needs work, and the difference in quality between the Portuguese league and the PL is quite big. He will be 29 in October. For a player who is to turn 30 after his first season here, when he is supposed to kick on, it is a big risk.

Klaus really need to stop cursing footballers 😆 Almost everyone he likes turned out to be shit or declined.

Why on earth would I want Lamela over Özil or Cuadrado over Sanchez?

We're linked with dozens of players each season. Some of them stay good, others doesn't. I'll say this though: I would rather have a half-fit El Shaarawy than a completely fit Welbeck. At least he would potentially be worth the time and effort we've put into him in the future. Same goes for Shaw vs Gibbs at the moment.

But last season he was better than Gibbs has ever been. He's expected to reach that level again eventually and then go beyond it. That's why his price tag was so high. He might not work out, but the gamble is worth it because the talent is there. No one will ever spend that kind of money on a player like Gibbs by comparison.

I don't think I would ever spend £30m on a 19 year old left back. Not unless I'd worked with him before or something, so I really had an understanding of what he was like in terms of attitude and professionalism. The kid would have to be insanely talented to take that risk. Imagine Utd's surprise when Shaw turned up at preseason overweight and unfit, then proceeds to have all sorts of injury problems throughout the season.

He wouldn't be my first choice as starting CF but for 25m he's cheaper than most and I'd take the risk if I couldn't get the elite quality I was after.
IMO the 'trick' is then to use him for those very strengths you'd sign him for in the final 3rd, rather than try to adapt/mould him into something else at that age.

Agreed - rather El Shaarawy for 20m than Sterling for 40m+.

The worst wishlisted player discussion is when half the forum went nuts at Wenger for not buying Joe Cole in 2010. He then debuts against us, gets sent off in an hour and is never seen at the top level again...

Capi was the main culprit IIRC.
