Indeed, it's important not to get too hung up on money as it often serves as a convenient excuse for failure.
I said before that most top teams these days have much the same class of players, some have a bit more depth but in the end it's 11 V 11.
Much more important are the type of top class players the manager assembles and what system and tactics that they employ.

This is a big if, but IF Chelsea and Man City fear there will be sanctions if they are in breach of the FFP rules, then they certainly can't spend massive in the summer.

We aren't used to shopping for the top end players. I am not sure the procedure is the same when you shop for a Gervinho as opposed to a Diego Costa where there are several clubs looking to land the player.

Chelsea are definitely trying to stay in line with it. Talk in the papers today is they might be willing to sell one of Hazard or Oscar to get enough money for a big name striker.

edit: more I think about it, they'd be wiser to see what they can get for Torres, Ba, Lukaku and Luiz in that order before touching Hazard/Oscar

Of course not, but Oscar doesn't seem that far fetched. They already made a profit with the Mata/Matic deal, but that won't be enough. If they need to make money to sign a striker, then Oscar is one they could do without.

they sold Mata, so who knows with these guys? at least the Mata sale was consistent with Mourinho's preference for power wingers. but that poor guy's confidence is shot. he's got the inconsistent Cazorlas about him now. unfortunate

but yeah, it would be mental to sell Hazard/Oscar. they are potentially the best in their respective positions in the league

It's quite evident that Chelsea are trying to follow FFP, otherwise there's no chance they'd have wasted time bidding £30m odd for someone like Rooney. They barely tested United in the summer.

That being said they won't have to sell star players, Lukaku will get them around 20m I reckon and the likes of Ba and Torres could probably get them another 15m odd. They could shift the likes of Cole and Lampard and take a significant chunk off the wage bill too. They're probably as gutted as anyone that Barca got a transfer ban, who the fuck will pay them 30m for Luiz now? 😆

Thing is when you sell players you have to replace them. And how are they for homegrown players these days? Apart from Terry have they any players who've come through at Chelsea? If they sell Lampard, Cole, etc will they have to buy English to replace them?

People are talking on here like Chelsea are nailed on to spend £30m on Shaw. If they do that how will they afford a massive signing up front and stay within FFP? I suppose they could sell Cech or Courtois too.

If they do need to sell, perhaps it gives us an advantage. I think we could afford any striker without selling. We should go out and put a foolish bid in for someone like Costa (50m pounds) and then watch Chelsea flail about.

As I've said before we need to identify our target and get a deal done early. That means before other clubs move from their first choice to ours and before clubs like Chelsea can do deals to get players out.

Exactly. The main thing they have with Costa is the fact that they can use Curtois as leverage to bring the fee down. That isn't too far fetched. You would also think that players like Lampard, Terry and Cole need to be replaced in the squad sooner rather than later.

Not so sure how much leverage they have regarding Courtois. Atletico can say "take your goalie", and then what will Chelsea do? They can't keep both Courtois and Cech.

Chelsea are in a tricky place, but I am confident that they will raise the required funds to put in a massive bid for Costa and then deal with the clean-up afterwards. That could mean selling Will.I.An, Schurrle, Ba, Torres, Lukaku, whoever. They'll deal with it afterwards

Atletico certainly wants Curtois. He is vital to them in fact.

yeah, but Chelsea don't have massive power over them. Chelsea can't just take Courtois and sit him. They need to sell him. The most reasonable buyer would have been Barca, but they can't buy. Maybe Juve or PSG could be in for Courtois, but it sounds like a lot of work for Chelsea

If Chelsea wants to sell Curtois there will be plenty of takers. He is a top goalkeeper after all.

It isn't about power anyway. Chelsea owns a player they want to keep, and they have a striker who is what Henry is to Arsenal to offer on loan for Costa.
Fwiw, I can see Torres do quite well at Atletico the way they play under Simeone. Their counter attacking style is reminiscent of Liverpool when Torres played there.
