The Tuesday Club boys suggest that Wenger went all out for the Chelsea game because Mourinho's expert in failure nonsense had gotten to his head and he wanted to prove himself. if that were true, it would be most disappointing for such an experienced coach. either way, 0-6 was unacceptable given the circumstances (game 1000, big rival, league title at stake)

No, you're right. With Napoli as well iirc Wenger employed Flamini Arteta and Ramsay on the wing to nullify Napoli's excellent attack.

The Chelsea game however was EXACTLY as how Wenger would approach any odd game against a relegation contender if we were playing at the Emirates, which was the wrong approach to the game. We have a general set up which we use 80% of the time, and then we have contingent line ups for special occasions. Wenger had the pope over for a meal and served him microwaved pizza.

Even against relegation fodder that was the wrong approach. Doesn't take a team of Chelsea's quality to punish giving the ball away in dangerous areas. I don't mind Wenger's concept on focusing on our own game, but even if he did that he should have seen our strengths currently lie with our defending not our attacking game.

Not everything has changed - Wenger still has his tactical strengths and weaknesses and so on - but our financial situation clearly has. There will be at least one big buy this summer. And Wenger's record in the transfer market (when he actually buys) is as good as anybody's when he actually buys.

Innervision, last summer was just like any other summer. We didn't do enough. And despite sitting on all that money, we had to wait until transfer deadline day to seal a single deal, after we had already thrown away 3 points in the league. Imagine where we'd be with those 3 points today. We're the same ole overly conservative 4th place chasing show

We will finish 4th with record cash balances. The slyrics may have changed (One Mesut Ozil) (Oh, we could of had a Suarez), but the song is the same. Not enough done with resources and 4th place finish.

We bid for Gotze and Hazard and everyone else more than likely over the last few summers, no deals actually done though. Mesut Ozil is a great, but fortuitous signing. Unless another one of those falls into out lap then we will do no real business this summer.

Wenger's recent record in the market is pretty fucking poor if you ask me. Gervinho, Giroud, Podolski, Andre Santos, Squillaci, Chamakh, Chu PArk - All poor signings

Arshavin, Mertesacker, Nasri, Koscielny, Ramsey, Ozil - Good Signings.

I'd say he is parring the course in the transfer market.

Wenger's record in the transf. market is good except for the forwards. Hasn't signed a brilliant one in way too long.

It's not the same 'song' at all. It may not have been enough, but last summer was the first in a long time where we've actually significantly strengthened the squad, lost no one of significance, signed Flamini and Ozil. In fact, it's probably our best summer window since moving to the Emirates by quite a distance, and one of the few where we didn't go backwards.

And I must highlight that not losing anyone is absolutely massive. We didn't really lose anyone of significance in 2007 (Thierry was a bit of a burden by then if we're being honest), nor in 2010 and in both of those seasons we launched decent title bids. For the first time in a long time we look like we're going to have two consecutive summers without losing anyone bar perhaps Sagna, but I don't think that would be a huge hit.

It's kind of ridiculous to insist on predicting what Wenger may or may not do about transfers this summer, since we can wait to see without any loss, but I must admit I don't have a lot of faith in us spending big even if £100m is notionally available.

Anyone with a memory will remember the club talking about financial shackles coming off for the past 4 seasons. It has made no difference to what we end up doing in respect to our rivals.

Does anyone honestly think we are going to be competing for a transfer when Chelsea, citeh, madrid, etc get interested in a player we are following?

We may have strengthened, but like other years we failed to dealing with the biggest glaring issue.

Forget what the club talk about, thats always going to be full of PR bullshit. Look at the figures yourself. An extra £70m+ a year in new TV and commercial deals is there for all to see. The first summer window with that extra £70m = a £42m signing with no players sold and wage structure smashed.

We missed out on our main targets but so did Chelsea, Liverpool and United. Shit happens and perhaps it's incompetance, but the intent is what you need to look for.

There's a huge difference between money in the bank and a significant increase in cash flow. Spend the 100m in the bank and it's gone. Spend the extra 70m we now have and fuck it, we'll have it again next summer. It's obvious why that would cause a shift in attitude.

Football inflation has eroded that cash simply because we didn't spend it. We could have easily netted £15m more expenditure a season on the basis that we would have increase cash flow as of now. It was obvious we would have new commercial deals so that should have been the plan.

Do you think we are going to burn through the cash balance and the increased cash flow now? That would have us running £50m net expenditure each year for the next five.

Gotta say otf has a point here, it's clearly different now, no use denying that. The question is how that'll be articulated in the summer. We'll make signings, that at least is obvious. If we end up in the same league position next year it doesn't mean we didn't strengthen the team.

It's about upping the chances of placing higher in the table, there is no linear relationship between spending and winning when it comes to the finer margins, only in the broader trends. So, we up our chances of winning over time through this painfully cautious, step-by-step approach, and then we rely on the match day to make it happen. I have less faith in consistent matchday performances over next season than I do in the next transfer window tbh, and to some extent, those two are related, but there ARE other factors.

Oh I agree we could have should have spent more, but that doesn't change the fact that new circumstances will allow even the conservative lot running us to splash out.

Don't know what their long term plan is, I think we'll see us splash out a bit in the next season or two then reign it in a little.

I expect they will spend more, but by comparison to the teams we think we are competing with it won't be enough to make a difference. I predict another profitable season next year, more money spent but the cash account going up again.

We have more money available and are probably more willing as a club to spend big, but I have zero faith in Wenger spending it wisely.
