Vermaelen wants out. One year left, we need to sell and replace. The other 2 aren't up to it.

Depends on the changes you make. Real Madrid made numerous changes last summer and they are playing well.

Took Madrid half a season to find their footing though. It works when you have a squad of their quality and Barca is having a bad season, but Wenger's annoying point about stability in the squad still stands there IMO.

There are rumors that Vermaelen is open to extending his contract, which would be great.

This summer is clearly different from previous summers. Wenger will add to the squad (and he has already signed the contract).

Squad stability has to be weighed up against squad quality and cost. Selling three players and bringing in three-four players would hardly upset the squad...

I think Wenger will bring in 3-4 players this summer. The problem is that Fabianski is leaving, we don't want to re-sign Sagna, maybe Vermaelen wants to go, and then suddenly we only end up adding a striker to this squad and just replacing people.

I really, really, fear that Wenger, in case he does extend his contract, sees the current side as a failure/or done, and starts rebuilding the whole team again, like he did in 2005, 2008 and 2011. We're now at the end of the current three years circle, and I'm not sure whether I'd want another one, going by the results of the previous three.

Fucking hell, that's one scary prospect.

Edit:Referring to the claim they large squad turnover isn't that bad cause Real bought a lot of players and they are doing fine...

I think Wenger demands a lot from himself and I don't think there's anyone who would be feeling worse than him about the result tonight. But when all is said and done, he's going to deliver CL football for next season and (probably) an FA cup. Whether that's enough for the fans isn't that important as long as there are enough tourist bums on seats next season. It's certainly enough for Arsene's employers. You hold a gun to Wenger's head and ask him to give us the league, and you won't see Giroud playing upfront for us next season. The club's priorities are different to the fans' wishes.

You do make a lot of sense Patters and you're probably right.
Do you think though that days like today must crucify Wenger internally?
He probably can't bear watching Giroud either.
