Yes on both counts. Most of the last 8 seasons we've not had the resources. Last summer was realistically the first we've had the chance to show our desire and our bids of Higuain, Suarez and Ozil are proof enough for me that we're serious, so was the bid for Draxler. We messed up last summer but so did Chelsea and United. Shit happens. The only ones that didn't are the ones backed up by an Emirate.

As for his tactics, I think for the last 12 months or so we've performed above our level.

If only we could separate Wenger the coach/trainer from Wenger in the transfer market. Yes his matchday tactics aren't the best but what kills us is his horrible transfer policy.

You really sound make him sound like a nothing manager. He has assembled this very team at a negligible cost and we have led the table for most of the season despite leading the injury league.

Wenger needs to stop doing the minimum it takes and start doing the maximum it takes in the transfer market. I personally believe too much is made of his matchday performance as such. He might be slightly rigid, he might make mistakes like a lot of other managers make but he isn't inept like so many make him appear. He is still a top class manager for me.

However, if he fails to win anything this season, I would gladly see us refresh and bring in a new manager with new ideas who has been given a fantastic platform by Wenger to build on.

Rohit, he is clearly good enough to make a top 4 team, consistently, which is laudable.
But he is incapable of going further due to his transfer behaviours and matchday ineptness.

The one thing I do wonder is just how good / dependable this group of players is. Once Ramsey went down, nobody in the front six seized the moment to step up and consistently be the man. Not one. Cazorla, Ozil and Ox showed some flashes, but nobody has pulled anything close to a Ljunberg 2002.

It really begs the question of how much of an overhaul we need in the front 6. Is it it 1, 2 or 3 super quality players that Wenger (or his successor preferably) needs to bring in here?

We not only lost Ramsey but also Walcott and with him our best penetrative player. Chamberlain has only just come back after a knee injury that kept him out 5 months. If Wenger had bought a top class center forward in the summer I am sure we would not be discussing this or his matchday incapability right now. Through the squad we lack a player who can make a difference on his own.

That's the core of the issue.
The one player making the difference on his own was Ramsey, he burnt out slightly and then got injured.
After that we needed Theo to give teams something to worry about.
Özil's decline in form hasn't helped either.

Wenger is tactically top class. No manager understands the game better than him.

The problem is our players aren't good enough. It's a miracle Wenger got them as far as he did.

I was quite impressed by the way Wenger set up the team for most of 2013, combination of defensively solidity, counter attacking football and tactically very aware. Unfortunately without the likes of Ramsey, AOC and Walcott, most of our outlets vanish and we have no choice but to resort to tippy-tappy football which has never worked for us and never will. A world class striker is a necessity, but we also need a few players that can just run into space to bring out the best from Ozil/Cazorla etc.

Ramsey and Walcott have been big blows no doubt. Especially the Walcott one because any team can suffer one injury to a major player but another coming so soon after really hamstrung the squad. Also Walcott came into the team as we lost an influential player and although not reaching his top form was contributing a lot of goals and crucial ones at a time we where starting to stall a bit.

His mere inclusion forces the opposition to play a slightly different game that gives our midfield a bit more freedom as it is not otherwise full of pace or players who will be running through so it is easier to deal with without a player like him.

The only flip side is that we suffered those injuries at a time where we may have been able to do something about it at least to boost the options in the team and that is where we missed a trick I think.

4 points off top spot with 10 games to go and a home qf in the cup...there's not a single person on this forum who wouldn't have taken that at the start of the season.

Spot on, this. I think Wenger is a wonderful manager. No one else would have gotten this much out of the material he had available. It's not just a question of creating a team where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts either - he actually improves nonsense players to the point where they can have a top career.

I just wish he would have taken this season seriously instead of treating it as a writeoff the moment a couple of injuries happened. We had the money and we had a transfer window where we signed no one apart from a crooked Källström on loan. It's the biggest pisstake I've seen. Two players in january and we'd still been top. We would have had significantly less to do in the summer too.

The big fear is that he/the club mess about in the summer again. I think we'd all handle falling a bit short this season if we had confidence in the management to be clinical in the next transfer window.

We're 3rd, the team in 4th has 2 games in hand and we're as good as out of the CL in the first knockout stage.

Our season pretty much rests on the FA cup now. I have no confidence that Wenger wont fuck that up though. His disregard for the cup in recent seasons has been infuriating.
