Not signing a striker back in 1998 cost us as well not the first time we've been short up top! We tried to sign Villa but Barca wouldn't sell and I doubt Berbatov went to Monaco on low wages. Would he really have improved us?
Firstly, these weren't the only options, just examples that we know did go on the move, and secondly if you have to ask "would he really have improved us?" you know he might've scored a couple.
Let's say we dropped a speculative £15m total outlay (fee plus wages) on a 50-50 proposition like Berbatov or Villa in January. Then we'd have had a chance of winning the league.
Does anyone think £15m spending this summer will give us a chance of winning the league?
Where's the spirit of adventure in this club? And you know what, we fucked up at the end of 98! Wenger's caution cost us titles back then as well.
I'll be amazed if we're sitting top of the league this January. These opportunities don't come around often in a highly competitive league. Hope it does happen but I don't predict it.
And that's all I've got to say on the matter because I can sense we're not converging on a common position here. 😉
