I meant "gone for him" as in actually signed him. We offered Newcastle half of what they wanted and promptly ended our interest when they didn't want to sell. I still think it was a mistake but it's hard to argue that we would have needed him this season.

Perhaps, but Newcastle are quite hard to do good business with under Ashley.

Cabaye and Higuain for 45m would've been a good alternative to Ozil over summer.

If those were the options, I am glad we signed Özil.

It's a moot point and I've no complaints that we signed Özil, but as it turns out we are still clearly lighter up front than we are creatively.

It was a strange summer, what with our main targets slipping away before we suddenly signed Madrid's number ten out of the blue.

Getting Özil really sets us up to compete in the next couple of season. Honestly , even after we signed Özil I didnt think we would be this competitive this season. I'm pessimistic about our chances now but if we keep the core of our squad and add one or two quality players I really feel we can go on and achieve great things.

not really. both of those are quality. Ozil is super quality. imagine Liverpool with two quality players instead of the super quality Suarez. They would not be in anyway scary.

Going by the rumoured price for Cabaye that would add up to £55mill and who would we play in the middle top of our midfield three? Apart from Rosicky our other options haven't worked and Cabaye doesn't look like that sort of player either.

If its Higuain and Draxler/Reus then I would agree with that statement.

Poor comparison. I don't disagree with the notion that ozil is super quality. But then that makes suarez super super super quality.

I'm not stating that one option would be better than the other—but obviously if we'd signed a top striker and a player like Cabaye we still would've had enviable depth in midfield and we'd be much better off up front.

We've got a golden run with our mids this season. Flamini has been a surprise packet, Arteta and Rosicky are in decent fettle, and Jack and Ramsey have both clicked into gear. And we signed Özil, and Cazorla's coming back, and we have a couple of decent outsiders in Gnabry and Ox. It's a superabundance. That's nine quality players I've just listed.

Apparently Juventus and Inter are in discussions over a swap deal involving Fredy Guarin and Mirko Vucinic.

Don't rate Cabaye despite those spectacular goals, don't think he has it in him to nail down a spot at a top 4 club.

442 with Mata on one wing and Januzaj on the other may work really well. Still need a bonafide first choice CM to go with Carrick. Mata always seem to score against us, would rather he didn't move to United during the season.

LB + CM + Mata would improve United a lot even if Rooney is on his way out.

Canny Mourinho, selling their best player to their rival because they don't need to play them anymore. He would be praying for United to take points off us and City.

Nope, he's already come out and said it's nonsense. He's not that good anyway.

Mata to Man Utd rumours doing the rounds again, Independent saying it will take over £40mill for Man Utd to have him.

Don't like the sounds of Mata playing behind Rooney/RVP...

I'm not sure what they need Mata for. Kagawa is already rotting away because Rooney occupies the same space. You could play him wide I suppose but not in the way United tend to use their wingers.

They gots januzaj too

They'd be better off spending big on gundogan

If Mata is going to United then Rooney is off.

I do wonder whether these leaks are coming from Chelsea who are alerting other clubs to his availability and what kind of money they are after. From Chelsea's point of view makes no sense to sell him in January, they are still in three competitions and he is still a very handy player for them.

IF they do sell to Man Utd it does make me wonder about Mourinho, wouldn't loan us Ba who after 22 games has made 2 starts and 6 sub appearances in the league but happy to sell them Mata? Does he not see them as threats or the conspiracy theory doing the rounds is he has no use for Mata and will sell him in the summer anyway but he can cash in now and mug Man Utd and thinks he might help them take points of us and City. Or maybe there will be some agreement that they sell Rooney to Chelsea in the summer. Too much bullshit going round, always happens during this bloody transfer window!

SSN saying talks between Man Utd and Chelsea are going well regarding Mata.

Mourinhos a sneaky one , he will probably loan them Mata having already played them twice, will also want to include in the negotiations some sort of deal for Rooney. Best case scenario for him , loan Mata to United so they can hurt other title rivals and also nail down a deal for Rooney.

Can't possibly imagine why Chelsea would sell to Man U unless an agreement like that is included.

If I was manager I would do exactly the same to be honest.

It's not sneaky, it's being very smart.

As soon as Chelsea enter first spot ( after equal games played) they will prob remain their for rest of the season unfortunately. Once Jose has a grip on something he won't let it go esp in business end of season. That's why we need City to beat them.

Chelsea will go deep into the Champions League, we won't.

I love how I keep thinking "Man, he's really going bald" every time I see Rooney. Then I remember that he's had several extensive hair transplant procedures done. That has to be one of the world's shallowest gene pools. The water barely reaches the ankles.

😆
His look's not improving much with age.
Why would Madrid want him?

Because he's really good at football and one of the top 5 most marketable players in the world?

Outside of Ibrahimovic, Rooney would be the best fit of any #9 in world football to play with Bale and Ronaldo in my view. He would certainly make a lot more sense to me than Suarez for Real Madrid even though Suarez is the better player.

I agree with that assessment, but only because I think he would be an ideal foil for Ronaldo. He is a very selfless player and would blend into the Real team nicely.

Not so sure Ibra would be a good fit though.

Mourinho would have mastered the art of war if he manage to give United Mata and win the league. Sly fox.
