Bergkamp needed to tell no one anything. Bergkamp played with Henry, Ljungberg and Pires, 3 of the most intelligent footballers you will ever see.

We are top of the table, we are creating more high percentage chances which is why we are converting at a great rate. This is the same squad that finished 4th last season on the last day.

Ozil is already to the attack what Mertesacker is to the defence. That is not to say he doesn't have more, he does, but like any other player he will take at least a season to shift up a level. He is already really good.

For a player with Özil's qualities, with the kind of price tag he had, I would expect a signing who would improve us to the point of seriously challenging for the league. This is exactly what he's done.

That doesn't contradict anything I said. I've said loads of times you only have to look at the large percentage of the chances we create that he's involved in to see his impact. He's one of my favorite players, I love his style.

That doesn't mean he's beyond critisism. For all the good and improvement he brings there's things he should be doing much better too.

This whole expecting more for £42mill argument is a load of nonsense. He isn't a striker so isn't gonna score that many nor is he a tricky wide player who is gonna cut in and shoot a lot or put in great dribbles out wide. Like I've pointed already a few players have moved for around £30mill this summer and looked much more worse. If Ozil had become available a month earlier we probably wouldn't of got him, there would of been a fair few clubs who would of paid the money without thinking twice. I think the biggest problem Ozil has had this season is the three in front of him aren't going to get behind the defence enough so a lot of his play has had to be straight to feet and keep things moving rather than slipping in runners. He has helped the team move up a level, we look a lot more efficient in possession especially higher up the pitch but people don't want to think it might be partially down to Ozil. IMO has helped the players around him improve and we look a hell of a lot better with him than without.

I will say though he is not at his best yet but I do think we will eventually see that. People just need to realise when players come from abroad it can take them time to settle in. Look at Per, in his first season most here didn't rate him and now look at how he has come along, Koscielny has improved a lot since he first came over from France. We've seen it so many times yet people expect instant results, this is a very physically demanding league and the tempo of the game is a lot quicker and aggressive than others. People look at Henry & Pires as legends but easily forget their early troubles settling into playing here.

I think some people on here when they have it in for a player simply don't want to let go, keep quiet when he is doing well and come out of hiding when he does poorly. Like how all the Wenger haters are keeping quiet now, if we lose or don't win the league then watch them come out in force.

On a more serious note though, people who are saying these bullshit about Ozil do not understand football properly. I am not saying I am disrespecting their views, but how hard is it to see that our striker have a lack of pace and movement? If you don't run behind defence, how is Ozil going to give throughballs? Its not rocket science.

Ozil's movement in the team creates alot of space for our teammates as well.

And also shoot more. As someone mentioned a page earlier, we create very high percentage chances, but I do feel we could be more threatening / spontaneous. There was a point yesterday when he dribbled and passed around penalty area when he could have taken a bit more initiative himself

There seems to be a trend developing here where some people simply refuse to acknowledge any criticism of Ozil at all. And if you make any sort of observation that isn't "OMG he's amazing I'm gonna stick another Ozil poster on my wall he's so dreamy" you are accused of "not understanding football".

The fact is he has good games and bad games for us. Recently his level has dropped from earlier in the season. Its not hugely surprising, it happens to a lot of foreigners in their first season because the pace and physicality of the Premiership is a level above the other European leagues. He's not as creative as he was, he's not as influential as he was. And frankly he can go up a level from where he was earlier in the season too. He drastically needs to improve when the opposition has the ball though. No one expects him to be Vieira but he needs to up his effort in closing down and tracking back.

Really though if what you expect from Ozil is what he did last night then you have a much lower opinion of his ability than anyone who expects more from him.

To be fair though mate you said last night that the game he had one of the worst pass % of any game he had played and at the time he had over 90% passing accuracy. So I think there is a bit of an exaggeration on the other side as well. Every time he makes a mistake some people here are like "Not what you'd expect for £42m"

Agreed Qs. The "you not understand football if you not agree wit me" is tedious and kills the discussion. In my opinion, Ozil has certainly been good but not as good as I had expected. I think we can expect more from him.

a bit Mourinhouesque perhaps? that's just the way we play. almost defense and caution first. if it puts us top of the table, i'm fine with it, but even if we win this way, i predict a backlash next year that this is not the Arsenal way, particularly amongst younger fans who are not familiar with our methods from 20 years ago

Movement is the problem for both Ozil and the team, it's too cautious. Too many players who pass the ball then drop back into space to provide an option rather than making a run forward. Wilshere, Rosicky and Santi are guilty of that in particular. Need Aaron back.

Ozil should certainly not be exempt from criticism. The other extreme should also be avoided. Only in his 5th month at a new club, in a new league, in a new country and 20 odd appearances it's unfair to weigh his performances against his transfer price, let alone brand him a glorified Hleb.

He has had a great impact on how we play, on the kind of chances we create and ultimately where we stand in the table. At an individual level he could obviously do more.

I don't agree with the defence and caution first bit. We become cautious towards the end of games when we are a goal up and that is how it should be. We can be more efficient when we win the ball back though. We have scored 41 goals but I am certain we would have had far more in the for column if we had a better center forward.
