We needed to sort out our CF situation first and foremost, and that;s wahat we tried to do. We exploited a situation to get Ozil but in reality we weren't poised to get him all summer, we were looking for, and failed to get, a good CF.
If Ozil gets injured there are plenty of players here who will come in to play his role, we have no one else up front.
When push came to shove last season, Cazorla played on the left and Rosicky played at #10. If we hadn't signed Ozil then things would've continued in this way. Rosicky is even worse than Giroud so I think we addressed our #1 issue heading into the summer. The problem was that our #2 issue was also gigantic. This is why we finished 16 points off the title last season.
What do you mean when push came to shove? He played there for a bit but saying #10 was or is out number one issue is pretty toothless when you have only 1 Cf, and he converts 13.5% of his shots. We created plenty last season, that for me wasn't an issue, and rosicky has at times this season out performed ozil, dortmund comes to mind.
I don't honestly think wenger went into the summer going "I think I need another #10 to supplement, Jack, Tom, and Santi". He got bum raped trying to sign a Cf and when Ozil came up it was ... little bit opportunity, nothing more than that.
Plus on the face of it Ozil has had a much shitter start to life at arsenal than Cazorla last season. He has delivered and created but Santi was doing the same last season if those who want to remember actually bother to do so. For £42.5 mil and the money we pay him he isn't straight away delivering the world class performances that some people were saying we would expect.
If you want a list of our issues over the last few years going forwards
2011 - Sell Cesc, fail to replace with a decent #10, potentially nasri was an issue as well.
2012 - Find the repalcement #10 but sell w world class Cf and fail to replace, instead bring in a guy who is not top level (Giroud)
2013 - Spend the summer looking for world class CF, fail. Bring in another AMC who is a top notch international will potential to step up, but still have the 2012 issue on the table.
2014 - ???
