I think they were caught unawares. I'm sure they had figured that all of United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs would enquire; and that at least two of them would get into a bidding war. That United paid so much for Smalling and Jones, and that Liverpool went into the season with a limited backline instead of bidding for Cahill suggests that managers of the big teams have doubts about Cahill.

The Arsenal boss, who sees his side host Swansea on Saturday, thinks Cahill, 25, is a promising player, but has indicated he was keen to secure the experience his squad has been criticised for lacking.

"I don't want to compare. Personally, I like Cahill as a player," said Wenger.

"Both are good players. Mertesacker is a good player. He is more experienced. He has more international experience.

"Cahill is a young, promising English player. I suppose he would have done well for us."

Don't think we'll be back in for Cahill, unless Mertesacker flops.

I think we'll be back for him, but Cahill himself probably won't move to Arsenal if we can't offer him first team football. He would be third, maybe fourth choice here at the moment. He would walk right into Liverpool's starting eleven though and I think that's what he'll opt for.

Let's not pretend that there is too much method to Wenger's transfer dealings in recent years. If an attacking player leaves, he will replace them with someone of equal or slightly less quality but he never applies the same logic to the defence for whatever reason.

You think Artera and Banayoun are 'equal or slightly less quality' when compared to Cesc and Nasri?

What about him replacing Thierry with a guy from Croatia (or a £3m striker from France if you think it was Ade).

Wenger is the same all over the pitch, bargains and youth is his game.

When you see the facts laid out clearly like that it would make you wonder yet again at the static / possibly regressive approach that Wenger takes when trading defenders.

He has very little regard for the art of defending.

Because he opted for Mertesacker instead. I don't like what he did with the fullbacks this summer at all, but that's neither here nor there. Cahill was clearly available. If he wanted him that badly he would have gotten him. If his plan was to wait a year and then pick up Cahill for free he wouldn't have bought anyone at all.

He didn't want Mertesacker that badly either, he was way down the list of players and Wenger more or less confirmed why he bought him in his interview today.

The only reason we didn't buy Cahill was a question of money, not quality.

I think he wasn't totally sure about either player. The only centreback Wenger really wanted this summer was Phil Jones.

No doubt in my mind that the reason that we did not get Cahill was solely down to the fact that we weren't even prepared to negotiate a price that would seem reasonable to Bolton.

Depending on Vermaelen's situation and possibly Squillaci /Djourou we may go back for him in January?

I suspect he planned to bring in Cahill if the price was right, keenly aware that the Englishman has only 1 year left on his contract. When Bolton weren't bullied, he probably figured he would try again this December or next June. And then he learned Vermaelen would be out 2 months, at which point he hustled a bid for the most affordable quality option: Mertesacker. That's how I imagine Wenger's mind works.

I think Cahill and Mertesacker were nothing more than names on a list over possible players. Wenger was willing to spend big on Phil Jones which tells me that was the player he really wanted. When Jones turned us down it didn't really matter who we picked up instead. We just ended up with Mertesacker since he was cheaper.

We bid big on Jones because he has more resale value and we don't even know if he was being bought as a centrehalf.

Cahill was our top defensive target this summer and we fudged it.

Maybe. The good news is that we should be able to pick him up in january then. I'm sure he'd come if we offered him first team football.

There is no way we're getting Cahill now.

Wenger spent about €25m on Vermaelen, Koscielny and Mertesacker. Plus we've got Bartley coming through as well.
