Özil as false 9? No thanks, quite despise the role to be honest. For me it only makes sense if you have Messi, but then again when Bendtner is your #2 striker and you have the options we have for the three roles off the front I can see why Wenger may want to go that route.

I think all the talk about "false" positions is pretty dangerous in the long run. Bit how everyone obsessed over positional specialists to the point where central midfielders and box to box players almost disappeared from the game for an entire generation. Successful football teams are built equally around unique players and not just predetermined roles. It's a waste of time trying to shoehorn someone like Özil into a system his natural game isn't made for.

Don't understand Loew's fascination with it either. He's a strange manager, does a lot of good work then does something daft and costs his team dearly. His performance vs Italy at the Euros was mind boggling.

I think he's too much of a tactician. Bit stubborn too. When Klinsmann was there Löw could focus on stuff like creating a quicker, more fluent passing game and pressing off the ball. I'm not sure he's a great man manager though. Seems to be at a bit of a loss when it comes to dealing with individual players. Formations and tactics always take precedence. Italy, by contrast, trusted their best players to make the right creative decisions and shape the game themselves. Tactics is where things begin for them, not where they end.

Löw has experimented with Özil in that position. Last time he did it was the last 20 or so against Faroe Islands. Not a bad idea either when you have players like Reus and Muller around him.

in a way, henry was similar. he'd start central then drift wide left and take a CB with him, and pires or ljungberg would make runs into the space he vacated. and bergkamp was strong enough to hold the ball up and play with his back to goal, so we didnt entirely give up that aspect, either.

But that was in addition to Henry being able to do all the things you want a centre forward to do, not instead of.
