If he would rather the window shut before the season started there's still nothing to stop him signing some players before the first game. It should have started in June/July, not after we've already lost a banker 3 points at home. Understandable that a lot of business happens at the end, but the fact that it "starts" now confirms he didn't even try to improve the squad in the summer and get new players prepared and used to the club for the start. Negligent.
I'm a bit surprised that someone with your knowledge of economics doesn't give a reasonable emphasis to the degree of price distortion as we approach the transfer deadline, Invis.
Anyway, the main issue with this window, for mine, is a due diligence one. We allowed ourselves to be persuaded by Suarez's people that his contract had a working release clause.
However, when we were tapping him up, our legal team should've been able to obtain and evaluate the fine print of that contract and should have given it the weight it deserved.
It looks like one of two things happened - either Suarez's people didn't understand his contract either (unlikely), or they thought it provided wiggle room in the presence of large bids from one or more suitors.
Speculatively, Suarez's camp may have thought that if a bid from us unsettled the player, Madrid or another club might enter the reckoning with enough money to spare Liverpool's blushes. It seems that as a consequence of this embarrassingly weak evaluation of his contractual situation, we ended up abandoning our pursuit of a worthwhile target in Higuain. We got played.
