Hard to pick who was the number 2 midfielder after paddy. I probably feared scholes and fat frank the most, they were always dangerous against us. Always felt we had gerrard and toures measure, essiens peak was short-lived, and i still dislike keane too much to consider him

In all honesty it's probably Cesc, if you consider him a midfielder during his Arsenal years.

Scholes was useless without the ball and would be on like ten red cards per season had he played for any other team. Can't take someone like that seriously, might as well consider Howard Webb in that case.

Essien's had a couple of great seasons at Chelsea before his injury I thought, might be misremembering something but I thought he did his ACL in 08 or 09. He was world class at Lyon and even before for Bastia but I never thought we had a shot, he went for like 40m in 05 already. Touré on the other hand looked like a possibility between 08 and 10. Xabi Alonso obviously too

Every team has these near misses but I don't think many have because of their avarice. Not like we're talking about Neymar money usually it was <5m that saw us miss out

To be fair to Wenger he was on Yaya's case much earlier than anyone else in Europe. Bloke even played in friendly matches for us but ultimately couldn't get a work permit and didn't fancy being farmed out to Belgium. If Arsenal had had it as easy as clubs in Spain and France when it comes to obtaining licenses we could have had Yaya for most of his career.

I know he was here around 2002ish but back then he wasn't nearly the player he was at Barcelona or even Monaco before. Who knows how his formative years would've turned out if he had been here, not like he would've walked into our midfield back then. My issue with Wenger was that he wasn't willing to shell out the 20m or so it would've costed to pick him up when he was at Barcelona especially after Guardiola took over.

Essien was a force of nature for the first couple of seasons at Chelsea or whenever injuries got to him. Won the midfield battle for Chelsea in most games.

And rightly so. He ran Uniteds midfield when they were an insanely good team. Can't stand him but he was a brilliant player.

Yeah, we can't really get to a position where there are no United midfielders in contention. Him and Keane were monsters in every sense of the word.

Obligatory Fuck United but if it has to be one of theirs - and they always won their titles by their attack and defence first and foremost - then it has to be Keane. Good one or two levels ahead of the ginger dickhead.

How do you make that list without including Rooney, perhaps the most genetically disadvantaged person to ever lace on a pair of boots? Balding at seventeen, shaped like a lumpy potato, posture and facial features like the hunchback of Notre Dame, and his entire body covered with what looks like pig skin... just imagine the incredible amount of inbreeding that has taken place to get to that point. His family tree must look like a telephone pole.

Didn't realise a lot of our important player's first goal was so good.

Who had the best? Rosicky, Arshavin or Reyes? Ozil one was very difficult technically as well
