Depends what you’re looking at. The longer time has gone, the more my respect has grown for Lampard. I really hated him in the moment, but he had a superb career.

He reminds me of that Ainsley Harriott cooking show where the guest celebrity chef has four or five simple ingredients and has to prepare a fantastic meal in 20 minutes. And then they serve up something special. Lampard really progressed the same way. Hardworking and productive going forward.

Lampard's underrated - his individual stats and overall trophy haul is better than the more celebrated Gerrard mainly because he recognised his limitations and focused on maximizing his strengths.

Yeah Lampard is too underrated, not just here but in world football. Even in big matches against peak Barca he has always held his own in midfield and some of the goals he has scored is just stupidly good.

Going by OMITT I don't think Lampard is underrated at all. I think 95% prefer him to Gerrard and he gets praised on here every 5 mins.

Personally I still think Fat Frank is a long deflected shot merchant who benefited off playing in an insane midfield and team in general.

I think you are a bit right on the second point. Obviously he was a top class mid but I think Gerrard was better. The difference is Gerrard carried his team.

Agreed - QS and Goon's points.

Not doubting Lampard's output, he was a phenomenal goalscorer from his position but he was far from a rounded midfielder at the top level. He had the support of a defensively sound team that freed him up to concentrate on his attacking game. I think Gerrard was much better in that respect but was failed by playing in a Liverpool team throughout his career which for the most part didn't have players of a high enough standard around him. I think he'd have been regarded far more highly had he enjoyed a career in which he played a more settled role, instead of taking on a jack of all trades role, whether that was by managerial design or his own enthusiasm.

Not that I like either.

Gerrard was reckless defensively, threw himself in tackles and had piss poor positioning. Benitez put him wide because of that, similar to Ramsey or Wilshere for us. Certainly a higher ceiling than Lampard in his day but much lower floor, Lampard knew what he was able to do and what he should be doing, Gerrard especially in the second half of his career had his dumb Stevie Me thing going which not only he wasn't capable of pulling but also limited his usefulness.

If we're talking best CM behind Vieira in the league Yaya Touré is in with a shout. Easily had the highest peak and over the course of his career - taking into account his time at Barcelona he was definitely better than either on both ends of the pitch.

Essien was better for my money, but his peak was cut very short by injuries. Both him and Touré were better than Gerrard by a long, long shot though.

Yeah Essien is another one who was definitely better, I'd pick him above Lampard too actually. Touré was a force of nature though, wanted us to sign him from Barcelona so bad from around 2008 or so, didn't expect him to become an attacking 20+ goals a seaon juggernaut but it was clear back then already that he had the potential to do literally everything on the pitch.

I agree Essien and Toure were better talents than Lampard but neither has anywhere near Lampard's body of work. Missing out on both men broke my heart

I think if we're comparing their respective midfield partners (i.e. Liverpool and Chelsea midfielders only), Xabi Alonso was the best of the bunch for me.

Yaya Toure is better than all of them though.

We missed out on all of them by the skin of our teeth which is a nice feeling.

Yeah can't really judge Essien to be honest, his top level game was far too little. I actually think he peaked at Lyon.

If we are talking about Chelsea's CM, surely Ballack should be better. Way better career and far more complete

Ballack was horrid in England though. Complete shell of the player he was in Germany. Essien was top notch even if it was just a few years.
