As I understand it, nominal values are normal in contracts because they remove ambiguity.

If Suarez has a £40m clause of some sort, a £40m+1 bid definitely triggers it, whereas there might be argument over £1 less. IANAL etc.

Indeed it would have been hilarious if it had been accepted, but it wasn't and we're not going to offer any more.
Maybe it was part of some elaborate plot to get Higgy cheaply but if it was it's failed miserably so Wenger has his excuse- "Oh well I tried- now I can pick up Jean-Pierre le Merde for peanuts like I always wanted."

We should just keep offering more and more until our bid is accepted?
2a. We should keep offering more up to a certain point, and then stop?
2b. How much, in Suarez's case? What if that gets rejected?
Or we should never have offered in the first place?

my understanding is that it was a confidential clause, not something to be made public to potential bidders. that's why their their hierarchy is so upset, the 40 + 1 is a provocative move to them.

Hmm. Well to my mind that particular theory isn't so much a response to the bid of £40m+£1 as it is an expression of an overarching Arsene view.
The fact that our bids have so far failed to produce a signing, and have now reportedly alienated Liverpool, means that people who already believe that Wenger will not spend big are using this as evidence to support what they already believe.
Clearly nobody can prove this wrong unless we sign Suarez but it certainly does not make this "smokescreen, keep the fans happy" theory true.
Perfect conspiracy theory.

Especially considering that our two confirmed bids this summer (Bender and Suarez) were both testing supposed release clauses and were revealed by the selling club on each occasion.

probably. first time i've seen a bid like this though, and it hasn't really helped our chances by winding them up so much.

Think we all know each other's opinion now and the only options left seem to be status quo or the Suaz monster.
Status quo is for another thread so if we get him, do you think we will make a profit when we sell him or will he be Wenger's biggest monetary loss as, i think, we all accept he is a nomad who will, more than likely, be gone in a couple of years max.

I genuinely see nothing wrong with the 40m+1 pound bid. That's (or was supposed to be anyway) his release clause.

At the moment we are just reinforcing the perception that Arsenal is an also ran club. At some point you need to bid big and follow it all the way through, even if you end up paying more than you'd like, cos that's what big clubs do to land big targets.

First para: we need to land Suarez at this point, unless we have a truly amazing plan B that includes a real marquee name. We don't need to go straight to £50m to "force" Liverpool's hand, though. That wouldn't necessarily force anything at this point. It's all about timing.
