You think people didn't actually think something has changed though we offered first double, then triple our previous transfer record?
There's a lot to be analyzed once this summer is over. To be honest, the much more reasonable account for me is that of "everything freezes as things seem too far detached to be real" - people just can't bridge between things they had a solid opinion about, and a world in which all order seems to be up side down.
Wenger the one person in the world to pay more than 40 mill for a bat shit crazy person? holy Wenger to go for a racist-cannibal in his team? and break his transfer record for him? Wenger to actually spend money - spend a whole lot of money? what? this is from which universe?
Then some would regain control and re-establish order by denial: no, Wenger has actually done no such thing: he only pretended, after carefully calculating each possible scenario and making sure it's water tight impossible to materialize, that he would spend money. But it actually is the same Wenger exactly.
Well - it's not. Some serious shit has been going on this summer, and whichever explanation you'd settle for, and whatever really happens in the end, this has not been "more of the same". Even though in many ways we are still left with the same. We'll see in one month.
