Because being filthy rich allows us to spend and dominate on the pitch too, which in turn will help us further increase the size and brand of the club and make even more money and so on.

my opinion doesn't change until we actually spend money to put together a top class squad. i'm not about to forget or forgive the 8 years at the first sign of competence from management. and competence isn't something to be praised - it's the minimum to be expected. ffs, we're the biggest team in the most important city in europe.

Our current commercial deals pretty much sort themselves out. We are who we are and that warrants a certain price. There is still little or no innovation in what we do. People say United get so much more because their brand is bigger but thats only half true. They also find new revenue channels that no one else has tapped. And they are great at growing their brand. Gaizidis and co are just doing bog standard modernization and even at that I still think the new stadium naming deal isn't as good as it could be.

It's not about praising or criticism, it's about whether or not they a doing their job. I specifically mentioned Gazidis and co because I don't for a second believe they decide whether or not we spend the money we have.

I think Gaizidis has a major role in how we spend money on the footballing side of things.

The deals are high and on everything else: you have to walk before you run.

I doubt it. Put it this way, if Wenger and the board collectively wanted to spend, he'd not have stopped them. The risk averse attitude to spending is clearly a club policy, not a Gazidis policy.

I think it's specifically Wenger's policy, the board have previously come out and said that we have 30m to spend on a player if we want to etc.

The prudence isn't enforced by Gazidis or the board, it's just Wenger's preference I think.

TBF that statement is not completely negative.
It could be interpreted either way and he did leave Gazidis out of it.

Hmmm. Currently I'm vulnerable to the belief that we're going to see a change in direction and policy as regards our summer transfers.
I'm not even yet thinking that I'm mad to be thinking like that.
I don't however think we'll sign Rooney 🙂.

Maybe we'll target players above your podolski, mertesacker, and arteta level, but I doubt we'll put up much of a fight if the other big boys show interest in our primary targets

True, we won't be entering into any bidding wars with Chelsea or City but our primary targets won't really be on their radar anyway.
They're not going to hoover up all of the quality in one summer, there'll be plenty left available

Indeed you are correct Tone, I don't think that Gazidis has much to do on the policy side as far as I can see he's just Kroenkes puppet on the board.
And IG you are also correct that the refusal to spend is all Wenger, he's supposed to be the football expert Kroenke just eagerly goes along.
Wenger won't spend big because he's scared, the times he's tried before he's been burned.
BTW I was happy once but when he made Gallas capi it was the final straw in a litany of mistakes and I realised he'd lost it, at least Fergie had the brains/balls to know when to get out.

The most recent podcast from Footballistically Arsenal (deary me, what an awful name) has the guy who writes Le Grove on it. He spent some time with Gazidis off the record recently and hints that the refusal to spend money is all down to Wenger. Seems to hint there is a change in mood at the club and a willingness by all to bring in an expensive player or two.

The next few months are going to suck aren't they?

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Wenger has always been the architect of our transfer policy and has enjoyed authoritative influence at the club since Dein moved on.

It has benefited us to save that money of course. Our plan has always been our problem.
