wait, so it can only be done when you're away from home? another team can't give you one at your ground? anyway for some reason i thought we had a game with them in late april. our home game with them is actually in feb, that's newcastle united in late april.

Fergie introduced when Chelsea won it, he thought it might shame and spur his team on to never want to repeat it.
It's since become a custom that the next team that plays the champions elect give them a guard of honour.

i thought the word in the runup to our guard of honor last season was that his united team gave the '91 team one.

I thought you meant for the away fixture, just to add more shame on his back. The home match is early in feb so that's not helping much either.

i think he was referring more to us winning the league than the invincible part of it. it's supposedly an honor for winning the league and we did that at white hart lane, quite a few teams had the opportunity to after that.

at least we got goldware, not silverware like all the other no-mark champions.

Dont think RVP really gives a toss to be honest. He's already achieved what he wanted in one season there and he will feel vindicated by his move. We'd have to win the league and have them finish 6th or something.

Yep. I just meant that season really. We had won the league several games before the end of the season but noone did it in those last few games. Did Everton do it in that last game in 01-02? Can't remember although I do seem to remember Liverpool doing it at Anfield in 97-98.

It's important that the players keep that balance.
I think because of the experience that we now have that's likely to be the case.
Knowing that a Villa result can happen at any time against any team should be enough to keep players grounded and working hard.
A lot will depend on how we respond to our next major setback, and any more major injuries, we find ways to win and we bounce back fighting like we did after Villa and we're real contenders.

We have a three week run from the end of this month that will tell us everything we need know about this squad.

Other than us, City and Everton it looks like regulation wins for the contenders for the top four this weekend.

If we manage to lose to WBA we'll probably finish the weekend in third place in the league and one or two points off fifth spot.
