I think he wants to be the main man at the club and I think his versatility has worked against him in recent years. Because he has been able to do a job in midfield the temptation has been to play him out of position. Also didn't help that they had C.Ronaldo so he was always going to play second fiddle to him, the seasons they have used him as the main player in their system he has done very well for them.
I do have a feeling RvP might of been bought in to eventually replace him than compliment him, supposedly have been issues brewing up for a while now. I don't think Fergie ever did forgive him for what he did a few years ago, at the time they didn't have any better options so had to bite the bullet and give him his improved contract.
