I'm pretty sure Campbell had a similar basic wage to Vieira and co, but was getting a huge lump sum every year on top of it. Something like £2m a year for the life of his initial deal. We have shit loads more money now, and no star players.
If it was up to me, my attitude would be simple. If Rooney is open to a move to Arsenal, and Utd are willing to negotiate with us, I would offer to the very limit of what I could realistically afford. Put the ball in their court. Players of the class and proven calibre of Rooney hardly ever come on to the market, we'd be fools not to be interested.
