Yeah, that's my point Ricky. You see goals like that scored fairly regularly. whereas Berbatov's was really quite special and better in my eyes.

If VanPersie scored it to win the NLD I suspect your reaction would be quite different.

Yeah, sure. But remove that context and people ought not to be instantly proclaiming it as the goal of the season; for me context like that is only relevant for fans watching the game, otherwise it is completely irrelevant.

Nah Rooney's was at least as good as Berbatov's.

It's only because it's Rooney that people are downplaying it (for those who are).

Goals in high pressure games are always worth more. Henry's against Real Madrid or Tottenham for instance are gold medal goals while David Ginola's against Barnsley (?) is barely remembered by even Tottenham fans.

...yes, gold medals for the fans that support the respective teams. But it's not just Manure fans who are going overboard.

@ Tony

If anything, I think it's because it's Rooney that people are hyping it.

Those two Henry goals have been in every champions league/premiership advert since.

Hahaha!

Got in the edit nicely.

Haha. I figured it wasn't worth it. I didn't want to spend the next thirty minutes explaining myself. It was just a small wind-up.

It was a smashing goal from Rooney in all honesty. I think Don would have rated it higher if van Persie had done it against Spurs.

It wasn't better than this one though:

I remember thinking this was the greatest thing I had ever seen some years ago.

I thought it was a very good goal myself. If Utd win the title they may look back at this goal which came out of nowhere. Rivaldo's against Valencia on that final day in the 90th minute for CL qualification is the best i have ever seen though. Gudjohnsen against Leeds a few years back was superb too.

No the media are hyping it up but there comes a point where the hype is justified. A bit like Arsenal's invincibles.

But on here obviously no one on here likes Rooney or United. So when they do well there are always caveats to the praises. Then the criticisms go too far so that the goal or piece of play is underrated.

If RVP scored that goal we'd be raving about his technique and what have you.

Me too. It had everything: composure, vision and outrageous skill. Not to mention it completed his hattrick that night. He knew exactly what he was doing. You can see it on the video footage. He pushes the defender away before he traps it with his chest to make room for the bicycleta.

1-1 Dawson.

You could sense a spurs goal tbh.

Only Brazilians can score that type of goal.

Completely unrelated, but isn't it strange how Messi has such typical Argentinian technique despite being in Spain for most of his life?

They're hyping it up because it's Rooney, and they're desperate for him to come back. It was a really good goal, and it was jaw dropping seeing it in real-time, because of it came out of nowhere, but like van Persie's volley against Charlton, it's not my favourite kind of goal. Lot of luck involved. Sometimes you catch it sweet and it flies in, other times it flies over the bar or you miss it all together. Peter Crouch has scored a similar goal, in fact, he's done it numerous times.

Crouch has the advantage that his legs are twice as long as any other human beings.

2-1 to Spurs. Krancjar with a great finish.

I'm glad we're not playing them for a while.

Sometimes when you score a long range shot it flies in, sometimes it flies just wide or over, and sometimes the keeper touches it out wide and sometimes it flies way over the bar......or you scuff it.

I hate Spurs, but I do wish that they can go on a run and finish above Chelsea. Chelsea fans boasting about their new-found wealth and bling really annoy the hell out of me. At least even if Spurs finished in 4th, we'd still be able to celebrate St. Totteringham's day

Yeah, and if someone puts their foot through it from 25 yards and it flies in the top corner, you won't see me proclaiming it an incredible goal, for those very reasons.

Rooney pretty much said this himself in the after match interview.

Was a cracking goal. You'd have drowned in your own dribble if Wilshere had scored it. 😛

Rooney shinned it. Haha, didn't notice it at the time, but just seen a replay after someone said he did on A-M, and you can see he shinned in good and proper. Still a great goal, just a bit lucky.

United were toilet again apart from Nani, Giggs and Smalling. Rooney was woeful apart from the wunder-strike. Credit to him for burying a chance like that in a match where he could barely control a 5 yard pass.

A word on Nani though - Unfortunately I think the Mancs have found their new leading light in attack. He's fast becoming the lynchpin in their forward line. He's still a selfish cunt, but he's a better all round winger than Ronaldo was in his time there imo. His dribbling and crossing make him a threat every time he's on the ball. Must stop him at the Emirates.

Superb goal from Rooney, in terms of both quality and importance. Ricky it's all very well to point out he shinned it, but given his shin was a foot and a half above head height at the time I think we can forgive it.

Hate to say it but we could rue those two points at the end of the season.

I noticed that on the replay too. Doesn't really take much away from the goal though.

This isn't directed at you, because I saw what you said regarding the goal on the other page, but I wonder how many of those Arsenal fans who will obviously belittle Rooney's goal because it was slightly shinny are the same fans who think RVP's against Charlton was one of the best goals ever.. we all know he shinned that one even worse than Rooney did.

I remember pointing out the RVP shin thing on A-M.

YBF went mental because he was an RVP fanboy. He just had to prove that he was better than Henry.

I was only really joking tbh. It was a great, great goal, that I feel was still a little lucky. And I genuinely say that about most goals like that. They would never win my goal of the season.

I felt the same about that goal from the Irish league (the outrageous backheel) that was up for the goal of the year award. It was incredibly lucky, nothing particularly calculated or intentional about it. Still a great goal, once in a lifetime., but incredibly lucky.

Suarez looked very tidy for Liverpool yesterday.

@Ricky I guess I'm from the "a great goal is a great goal" school. Anyway, fuck Rooney, we've got van Persie.

asajoseph wrote:

But if he has a poor game will you write him off?

Maybe a string of poor games.

And before you say anything i'm not a big fan of Chamakh either.

I believe that was a sly dig regarding your disdain for Chamakh.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW ASAJOSEPH!

I don't really like Chamakh that much either.

But I remember him specifically saying Koscielny looks great during his pre-season games but then at Blackburn he didn't really like him.

With Chamakh he's more or less consistent.

Sunday Supplement did a feature on overhead kicks this morning, and for some reason didn't include this one - still one of the best goals I've ever seen.

Clearly shinned it though.

Mauro Bressan's was good as well, but it's the timing of Sinclair's which (like Rooney's) makes it so exceptional. Laurent Robert's was the other one that impressed me the most.

Fuck Rooney indeed. That moment of great, great quality aside, he was bloody awful, completely ineffective, and looked so slow and weak. Looks to me like 10 years of hard football at the top, when he's body maybe wasn't totally ready for it, have really caught up with him.

Agreed. I think his alleged recent "form surge" is much exaggerated. But United still get the points.

@ Ricky

Have you seen Sky Sports this afternoon? They are wanking over this! Hahahha! The Sky hype. 😆

They went through Rooney's top goals since 2004/05 (including his goal against us at Emirates last season).

They then showed some Sunday league team trying to recreate the goal. A guy crossed in some nice loopy balls and a guy tried to bicycle kick it. Most of them were missed completely (they couldn't even get their legs that high) before eventually a guy smashed one in. There was no opposition. Just a crosser, a shooter and a keeper.

Then they showed the league team claiming it to be the best goal of the season.

Then they showed Rooney's goal.

Then they spoke to the United fans outside the stadium.

This one is pretty special:

And I was at this game, behind the goal!!!

Are leicester your second team or were you a former fan?

Great goal by the way.
