I agree. My point was only that we are technically just one player away and that player was RVP. There was a stat going round that he has won Man Utd something's me 25 points - obviously he is worth more than just his goals but at the same time, if Man Utd didn't buy him, they would've bought a good striker or moved things around so Rooney got more goals. But there is no-one quite like RVP that Man Utd would've bought. Man Utd losing the 10 points (a very conservative estimate over the 25 points I'm talking about - he was carrying them earlier on when they are usually slow starters and kick ok at Christmas) and he couldve given us 10 points. That makes up the 20 point gap you talk of.

In Cesc's case, I don't think he's that good personally, and even if he is, he's not coming from Man Utd...so we still have the Van Persie difference to make up. A top class striker (proper top class...one of the very best in the world type) can turn so many draws into wins.

interesting maths, sir. how many points did we have after 34 rounds last season? so what is the net gain/loss of going from van Persie to Giroud?

how many more points does United have this season than last season after 34 rounds? again, what is their net gain from having RvP. show me that it is indeed a 20 point turnaround this season, and then i will buy your argument.

Every last cent of it. We're not likely to find two 20m pounds players who are as good. And we need to start bringing in/back star power. End of thread

We wouldn't need to spend 40m. Barca gave us 30m and Cesc gave us 10m. Would I pay the fee that Barca paid us? Without question the man is the best direct passer in world football.

Honestly I'd spend it on a striker instead. Yes Fabregas is a top class player but we're stacked with AM talent and a £40m striker would mean a lot more to us than a £40m attacking mid.

Phew. I'm glad someone agrees with me, because that's what I would've said. Not sure I'd spunk all that amount on a striker, but enough of it that Cesc would be out of the question.

Well I think if we had this hypothetical £40m the lions share of it should go on a striker. Say £25-£30m. You'd probably have enough then for a Gonalons/Diame/Wanyama type.

I would spend that money on Cesc without even hesitating. He turned Adebayor into a 30-goal striker. Giroud would easily surpass that with Fabregas supplying him.

I think we could get both Cesc and Jovetic for a bit more than 40m (25m-ish + 20m-ish)

Jovetic isn't world class, but he's good, and could be great with Cesc supplying. Theo's and Podolski's output would probably increase too with Cesc in the team.

Fabregas made the players around him better. He brought out the best in Rosicky, Adebayor, even a Flamini. His passing and movement did this. We add him and I assure you that Cazorla looks twice the player he already is. Fabregas and him would be lethal.

If there's any truth in this - the best reason for considering returning Cesc to the Emirates is that he's clearly the only top quality player that we will realistically aim for.
What if someone else were to bid massively for him and we don't match the bid?

IF Fabregas is available the club should spend that extra bit to land both him and jovetic/villa/soldado
