I came out as Elite. When I was a bit more restrained with who I hang out with, I came out as technical middle class.

They didn't even ask if I was married or had kids, i have neither so all my money is for my benefit.

Comfortable middle class. I think they nailed it anyway because that's how I feel ... comfortable. I don't want for anything.

I says I'm established middle class. I reckon maybe the household income and house value things have skewed that a bit higher because both are still higher here in Ireland than in most of Britain.

According to this thing, I tap in my annual household income after tax and I'm in the top < 0.1% of the world's population. And I'm pretty damn sure I'm nowhere near the richest person on this board ..

The average graduate salary is enough to put you in the top 2%. A sobering thought.

Anyway, I think there's still very much a vestigial class-consciousness in the UK - even if it doesn't affect social mobility in real terms quite as much as it used to.

I've been quite struck by Australian (Sydney) culture over the last 18 months though, Sydneysiders seem to be far more hung up on class than I expected them to be.

Class conscious people (from any class) in Ireland are just about the most nauseating types you could wish to meet.
Can't cope with people who are hung up on where they rank in society and limit their lives accordingly.
It's refreshing to meet people who don't really fit into any grouping.

The word "class" is outmoded thats the point of the survey.
People are focusing to much on wealth its not a great indicator as we all know about multi millionaire chavs who lack any kind of civilised cultivation.
I think niches or micro groupings are a more accurate reflection of society today we here are a perfect example, and anyone who doesn't fit in like racists idiots or Squally are ruthlessly cast out.

The thing is, there isn't really a proper upper class in Ireland like there is in Britain, we just don't have enough of a history of wealth or monarchy for it. So really the only people here who care about class are the upper middle class nouveau riche or those aspiring to that. And even a lot of that has died away with the recession.
