Daz is right, I can't really see what G89's getting at. Our pursuit of Suarez and Higuain last summer fits the pattern of prevarication and bargain-hunting perfectly.

We inquired after both at about 30-40% below their real asking price, and no surprises, we signed neither.

Then we ended up paying mucho dinero for Özil in the last couple of days, working on the hop.

The difference last summer with some previous years was our failed advances became a media circus because of the shabby clubs we were dealing with.

Who knows what low-ball offers we've already put in for the likes of Sanchez? The point is other clubs are concluding deals, not putting their toes in the water.

That may be true for Higuain but certainly not Suarez. In the latter case we were misinformed and embarrassed ourselves. Wenger clearly wanted Suarez. I think he would have bid 45,000,001 Mn GBP rather than 40,000,001 Mn GBP if that is what it would have taken.

There was no going back the way it all panned out though.

I can understand top targets taking a while, particularly ones from big clubs as the situation is often complex.

However given that we probably need 4-5 players this summer, you'd have thought we should have been able to tie up at least one or two of them, particularly the less complex ones like a backup keeper or right back.

My point is this- We wouldn't be sitting and waiting on a deal agreed in mid-principle like the one that was nearly for Higuain in mid-june to finalize it on the last days of the window. The Ozil one was linked to Bale so that one wasn't up-to us.

To summarise: The fact that we've not qualified yet won't make a difference to deals in terms of appeal or finance.

I agree the qualification is irrelevant—we'll qualify.

I don't see what the issue is here to be honest. Our rivals are signing solid league players—we're not. We're slow to move, that's not under debate, the only issue is whether you think it's a problem.

Yes regarding how slow we are it's disappointing but not surprising. The club's ability to penny-pinch is unparalleled. In about 6 weeks the season starts. In 40 days we're already onto the community shield. A weak team given a another tonking due to lack of depth and reinforcements could have a negative effect on the team.

Gut feeling is that Sanchez will end up at Man City ahead of us if he ever moves to the PL.

Reckon Wenger's most likely targets are still playing with French national team so he is waiting for their involvement to end. Probably is genuinely interested in signing some German players, but will have to wait until their involvement finishes too. While other clubs have signed players still at the World Cup, I think that any deals have to be concluded relatively swiftly for obvious reasons. However, I don't think Wenger's transfer team can help but make negotiations protracted because of their desire for "value" hence no moves (for players at the World Cup) thus far.

Think we may end up losing out on Schneiderlin because Souhampton will have no need to sell now that they have made significant money out of Shaw and the soon to depart Lallana.

Totally wrong. We agreed a fee for Higuain before Madrid jacked the price up and we went for Suarez instead. Then we met his release clause and Liverpool ignored that and violated his contract, knowing that they could get him to wait until Barca or Madrid came calling.

Last summer sucked but we weren't excessively low-balling IMO.

Of course we were low-balling. Higuain moved for far more than our offer and our bid on Suarez was far less than Liverpool's valuation (because of the supposed clause that wasn't worth the paper it was written on, but still).

We crashed out of both deals and then brought in Yaya Sanogo, let's not sugar-coat it, as far as striker shopping went it was a steaming turd of a summer.

It would've been absolutely horrific if we paid anywhere near what Higuain ended up going for. He had a worse season than Giroud.

Hardly, he's a fine player and would've performed differently at Arsenal than at Napoli.

He has an excellent scoring record pretty much everywhere he's played.

Everyone needs to give up on the idea that a goal-a-game striker can be had for 30m. They cost 70m nowadays.

We have wildly divergent views on Higuain. He's absolutely nothing less than a bullet dodged as far as I'm concerned. Complaining that we didn't buy Higuain for €40m makes someone sound like this guy to me:
