“We have better financial resources than the years before and we have created that
ourselves. That is massively important to us,”
Wenger said on Friday.
“We will see what we can do until the end of
the transfer period and certainly before the
new season starts. That’s what we are working
on at the moment.
“The fans, the players and everybody is
reassured by big names. But what is important
is that we don’t need numbers, we need
quality.
“For years we were out of the race for the
top-level transfers but we are coming back
now because we are in a better financial
situation and also because of Financial Fair
Play. That will give everybody a bit more even
ground.
“I still believe that, even if we are in a stronger
financial position, all our values still have to
be the same.
“We must rely on the quality of our work, on
the style of our play and the fact we develop
our own players. We will only use financial
resources to bring in one or two players who
will give us something more.
“It’s very important that we keep to our
strengths and what managed to get us through
this period.”
Interesting stuff from Wenger. The part in bold I feel has been misinterpreted by the press and by Arsenal blogs. I haven't seen the interview/press conference myself, but I think Wenger's talking about the club's transfer strategy moving forward, rather than stating we're only looking at two players this summer. He's making a general point about the club's ideals staying in place - patience, good work on the training ground, bringing through our own players - whilst at the same time supplementing that approach with an investment in a world class player or two every summer, the same approach Barcelona or, to a lesser extent, Bayern Munich have. That's the ideal, but we're not quite there yet, who knows what we'll do this summer?
