If we did lose out on Capoué, can put that down as another transfer blunder from Wenger / Gazidis / Law / whoever it is we blame for these things. It would have been a hell of a lot easier to prise him away had we not waited until they'd already flogged Sissoko.

Monreal is a first team signing, not just cover for Gibbs. It strengthens us in both first choice and back up left back.

People seem to think we didn't need to improve on Gibbs.

To be honest, our left flank is wide open at the best of times. Gibbs is brilliant at getting caught too high up the field without any cover. Don't know when to push up and when to stay back. Monreal is a very welcome signing with that in mind.

Also Vermaelen and Santos offer no link up play with Podolski which hampers the effectiveness of our already bang average attack - in fact the left flank is the only area where we see combination play between Gibbs and Podolski.

I guess it stems from Don's perception that fullbacks don't have much to offer. Or, rather, poor fullbacks don't affect the team.

Yeah, I can appreciate he may be an improvement but it's like giving the team a plaster when it needs open heart surgery.
