Definitely! The comic book setting acted mostly as backdrop. The film contained all the classic Ang Lee themes with broken families and estranged fathers, and it committed to them surprisingly well. The transformation from man to hulk became a way for Lee to show how Banner's inability to deal with his pitch black childhood memories manifested itself physically. I loved the explanation that it was his father's self-obsession and cold-heartedness that created the monster within, fed it and finally unleashed it.

The Norton version, by comparison, had higher production values but it lacked all the punch from the previous film. It wa essentially about a man who turned green when he got angry.

The thing is, Klaus, the really popular comic book characters like Hulk are very valuable commodities. I think that Ang Lee movie only made about $150m at the US box office. When movies like Iron Man can make 70 or 80% more than that, the studios know they have too much to lose if they sacrifice senseless action for cerebral drama. It's a sad reality. You won't get a big super hero movie like that again.

Yep, well put. I think someone somewhere screwed up in a major way by hiring Ang Lee. He crafted a (mostly) brilliant film out of the source material but most people who watch comic book adaptations aren't looking for cinematic quality. They're looking for a few hours of entertainment. Conversely, people who like difficult and thought-provoking films usually don't look for them among comic book adaptations. As a consequence the audience that really appreciated Hulk for its ambition was fairly small.

Hulk actually had plenty of good action though. Its weakest point was the ending.

Personally I think it was just unfortunate to be made at a time when it couldn't be swept up into this ongoing franchise.

To be honest, I've found this franchise to be mediocre. I loved Avengers and liked the first Iron Man movie, but the Hulk reboot, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America are movies I will never play in my home. They are Transformers 3 quality.

Superhero is such a badly done genre. If I owned DVDs, I'd buy only Ang Lee's Hulk, Dark Knight and Avengers. The only other superhero who ever really mattered to me was John Rambo.

Saw Thor Saturday then watched Avengers Sunday.

Thor was mediocre, sometimes cringeworthy stuff, with Arseguard stealing the show. I was wondering why Natalie didn't just shag Thor the moment she met him, with that please-fuck-me-now stare of hers.

As for Avengers, the script stole the show, the baddies were caricatures (which is fine and never what Avengers was about) and it was overall a great bit of fun. the only problems I had with it was problems I have Avengers as a premise in the first place (Captain America sucks and is a ridiculously outdated concept) and the kind of limp ending which only served to remind me HOW HOT WAS NICK FURY'S RIGHT HAND LADY WHY DO I NOT KNOW HER

Nick Fury's right hand lady is from a sitcom called How I Met Your Mother. In that show, however, she doesn't usually prance around in a figure-hugging suit. Plus she looked like she's been in the gym (although she'd do well to put on back one or two of her sitcom pounds).

Ah, that's who that was. I don't really watch that show.

She's certainly very attractive in the film - caught myself thinking she was better looking than Johannson a couple of times. Very dull character though. I suppose they plan to give her the Coulson role in later films.

@Bandy I sorta liked Thor, but I'll admit it was mediocre at best.

Watched the new Underworld. It was pretty crap. Way too much plot for one and a half hour of film.
