qs: I've been meaning to pick that one up again. I watched the first episode of The Vampire Diaries and figured it would be another teen show. I remember reading some of the books when I was younger though and they got pretty dark after a while. Would you say it's a bit similar to Buffy?

Yeah similar enough. Not quite as witty.

I was the same, watched episode one with my girlfriend and thought it was utter shit but I heard good reports then from her and some reviewers so I went back to it. It is silly teen stuff but it knows it and doesn't overload on the teen drama. Sticks to OTT vampire nonsense which makes it alot of fun. And they absolutely tear through plot like no other show on TV, they just burn up ideas in 2 episodes that would take True Blood a season and half to get through. People die like crazy, people get turned like crazy and the guy who plays Boone in Lost just hams it up all the way through and that makes him the best person in it.

Haven't been able to make it past the third episode of season 1. Too Sweet Valley High for my taste.

Saw the old Jarmusch film Stranger Than Paradise last night. Pretty good character study, probably a little dated. 7.5/10

Yeah its shit at the start, took me about a dozen episodes to get into it. I don't blame anyone for dropping it early on.

I love Terry usually but TOL didn't do it for me. By the end I thought I had just sat through a really fucking long Calvin Klein commercial with Brad Pitt pretending to be my father intermittently throughout.

I loved TOL except for the last 5 minutes, that was a real let down at the end of such an exceptional film.

I agree Qs. The quasi-mystical BS at the end with Sean Penn waving his arms in a yuppie suit on the beach was a let down. Penn himself said that in an interview recently—reckoned it would've been a better film without his role, and I think I agree.

Saw The Avengers earlier this evening—still a bit stunned. It's a total visual orgasm, a bit like one of the recent Transformers films to the power of ten. Not sure if you'd really call it a 'film' though, but worth a look as an experience in general. 8/10

All the mains get several set pieces. Could've done with a bit more Loki plotline in my opinion.

I was thinking about it further and one thing struck me, which is that the cast of this absolutely ooze charisma.

I absolutely could not stand the whole idealisation of the hippy mother thing throughout. She was such a worthless character, thin as paper. Then again, never really liked any Malickian women. He's got good taste in cinematographers, though.

saw it yesterday as well - it was the most fun comic book movie i've ever watched. i'm a bit over the whole dark and gritty schtick. this movie hit all the right notes, and was full of those crowd-pleasing "i wonder what would happen if Hero A did such and such to Hero B" moments

and there is an after credits scene, in case anyone was wondering.

Yep, it's definitely good that they don't let the "what if X took on Y" questions go unanswered ... they provided a lot of the film's funnier moments as well.

one thing they really nailed was the hulk. i was concerned at this, being the third variation of the hulk in 10 years, but it was the best one. ruffalo played it nicely and - if he informed the cg performance - did a stellar job.

Ok, spoilers:

The only thing I thought lacked in this version of the Hulk was that he was too orderly and manageable during the final sequence. They neutered him after spending the whole film talking up his unpredictable destructive potential.

But I really liked Ruffalo's take on super-genius Bruce Banner. Seemingly donnish and a bit muddled and ruffled, actually rather on the ball and aware of what's going on. Bit more interesting than Downey Jr as Stark in my opinion, although the immediate bond of intellectual respect formed between the two was plausible and kinda nifty.
