I haven't seen Hunger Games yet, but I'm a bit sad Jennifer Lawrence has been sucked into another bloody Young Adult Franchise, no matter how decent it is. She is so damn good in Winter's Bone, which is probably still my favourite film of the last couple of years.

Loved her in Winter's Bone. There are literally no bad close-ups of her face on screen. As an actress she has something for sure.

Had read all of the Hunger Games books before, and saw the movie only a few hours ago. It was very desensitized in my opinion. A few things weren't quite like I imagined, mainly how the people from the Capitol looked/dressed. Lenny Kravitz wearing golden eyeliner was ridiculous.

Overall it turned out good though. Don't regret paying money for it like I have some other movies.

You and me both, Burnsy. Winter's Bone is a bloody masterpiece. Lawrence showed a genuine side in that film that is a very rare quality in actors nowadays. In my opinion it was an Oscar worthy performance. I'd hate to see her get stuck too long with Brett Ratner and his entourage of producers and two-bit associates. She's too good.

Did you ever see Debra Granik's debut film, Down to the Bone, by the way? It's a small documentary-styled film about addiction with a surprising degree of authenticity. There's something about Granik's style that manages to capture the realness of the story, as well as the places and characters it depicts, without stooping to the same old clichés that we're usually exposed to in films like this. I thought it was one of Winter's Bone's most remarkable achievements too. Vera Farmiga is amazing in the leading role. Apparently Scorsese went out of his way to cast her in The Departed after watching her performance in Down to the Bone.

I agree about Winter's Bone's authenticity - the shooting style is almost Herzogian (quel wank!) at times. Not too much sense of a hyperreal cinematic landscape or sets, which adds to realism, and also multiplies the value of things you as the viewer know to be (mostly) real.

I haven't seen it but I've read it's somewhat of a disappointment despite the low expectations. The shark/fish creature subgenre has been pretty disappointing for a while, actually. Sharktopus was good, two of the Mega Shark films are pretty decent and Shark Attack 3 has its moments but you need go to back a few years to find the real gems. I always recommend Frankenfish and Creature to people who are looking for "good bad movies" within the genre. Snakehead Terror is a good watch too. There are big-budget flops like Deep Rising too of course if you're into sea creature horror. Generally snakes have been more successful than sharks for a while though.

Speaking of snake creatures, I sort of liked the idea for a new creature film that someone sent to Sci-Fi Channel last year. They had an online competition where fans could suggest new, fresh creature plots and some creative genius sent them a short pitch for a movie titled "Pandaconda" which won. Basically it was about a panda with a snake's body that killed a lot of chinese communists. It never got made for some reason.

Good thread this, always gives you something to watch when you don't know anymore.

Didn't want to watch Thor at all, but gave it a go since I have nothing to do all days and think it wasn't that bad as some mendioned. 6/10.

Saw Goon yesterday, it's about ice hockey. Seann William Scott is the main actor, a fool who can do nothing but fight and defend the team, got his own role and he liked it. Quite funny at times. 7/10.

Don't exactly know where I found it but just downloaded The Throll Hunter, don't know what to expect from this but will probably watch it too.

Re-watched Election 2 with the girlfriend last night.

On the whole, I remembered the plot of the film, which is superb, very well - but I lost a few points with my viewing companion for somehow forgetting about the sequence where Jimmy and his henchmen pulp a captured gangster's hands with a sledgehammer, hack his arms off at the elbow with a machete, put them through a meat grinder and feed them to mad Alsatians who are chained at the neck to his terrified fellow prisoners.

I seen that a few weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. When that guys the lead you go in with very low expectations but its was a decent little film, funny and quite likeable.
