You have obviously read the books. I just don´t understand how you can rate the movies better. But hey, no biggie. Can´t think of a single book that I have liked where I have liked the movie better tbh. Not put too much thought into this, mind.

Loads of movies are better than the books they originated from.

Bladerunner and Jurassic Park spring to mind.

Also The Shining.

Disagree strongly with The Shining. Let me ask you - did you see the movie first or read the book first? Makes a difference.

Silence of the Lambs and Last of the Mohicans were top-notch. Let The Right One In was much better than Ajvide-Lindqvist's novel too. No Country For Old Men was great. Most of John Huston's films were better than the books they were based on. Not sure if it's apt to mention since Anderson altered the story and tone so significantly, but his stop-motion version of The Fantastic Mr Fox was better than Roald Dahl's book as well.

I'd put Full Metal Jacket in the category "Great films based on even greater books" though. I read The Short-Timers last year and loved it. Hasford was a genius.

Fantastic Mr Fox doesn't count Klaus. Also, it's the only Wes Anderson film I've actively disliked.

Be honest chaps, the idea that a good film can't be adapted from a bad book is deeply flawed. Most decent genre films are better than the works from which they're adapted. The James Bond films come to mind - Ian Fleming was an average writer at best - or more recently The Ghost Writer, which is adapted from one of the most godawful pieces of shite potboilers, and is a taut, compelling thriller as a film.

Staying in with the GF tonight. Thinking of Moneyball and Ides double feature. Let me know if any of you have reservations about either.

Thought Moneyball was decent Cali, and so was Ides - quite a bit better in fact. Might be a little dry as a double header.

Ides to me is just a lesser version of that Travolta movie a couple of years back. Moneyball was quite good although more could have been made visually with the statistics. Cali, your girl probably needs to be into sports though to enjoy this.

Or Maybe she is satisfied just watching Brad Pitt 😃

I liked Moneyball, but wasn't blown away by it. Part of my problem, I think, is that I've never enjoyed baseball. I just don't consider it a sport - 150 games a year puts paid to any defense. 🙂 it's also so incredibly dull that fans at my local stadium are either reading newspapers, sitting in boats outside the ground, playing on slides with their kids or most likely drinking behind the stands. Beggars belief.

Didn't get round to Ides, but suspect ill enjoy the subject matter more.

Watched "Girl with a dragon tattoo" (English version), thought it was entertaining.

Yep. You're the only Wes Anderson based poster I've actively disliked. 🙂 Though that guy The Royal Tenenbaums a while ago was a borderline fuckwit I'll admit.

Seen loads of films lately. Here are a few.

Watched Young Adult at the cinema the other night. Decent, but not brilliant, another Reitman / Cody collaboration. Oddly similar subject matter to Bad Teacher, in a way, but more serious. 7/10

Saw the doco Buck, about horse trainer Buck Brannaman. It was fascinating, but I can't give it full marks because it didn't bother to ask the tough questions - eg what happened to his brother? - or perhaps the answers just weren't quite interesting enough. 7/10

Re-watched Ladri di Biciclette and Caché last night. Both great films, though the latter didn't work so well for me second time around.

Quite like the look of Young Adult, but thats mainly because I've decided Charlize Theron is the most beautiful creature on the planet. Other film I'm looking forward to Is Carnage - concept seems very clever.

Saw the Descendants last night, similultaneously funny & heartbreaking. Wasn't quite up to Up in the Air, but similar vein.

I downloaded a cam of Carnage to watch the other night, but the quality was too poor. Couple of friends who've seen it say it's a laugh riot.

Young Adult was a lot of fun, and I have to agree re Charlize Theron.

Haven't seen the Descendants yet. Speaking of Clooney films though, a reviewer I read the other day said that she was turning into the female George Clooney - highly attractive (to the opposite sex) actor who chooses interesting roles, which I thought was a fair call. She's pretty hot.

However, Young Adult just wasn't quite the full experience for me. Same team that made Juno, which I liked more.

Therons been way up there for me since Curse of the Jade Scorpion.

Anyway watched Girl With the Dragon Tattoo last night. I hated it, so long and drawn out for such a predictable film. If you chopped about 50 minutes off it and just made it much more actiony you might get a mediocre film, as it is I thought it was just terrible.
