I bought Tropic Thunder on DVD without having seen it and I couldn't sit through it in two attempts.

I saw it in a cinema with some mates and thought it was absolutely hilarious.

Then I rented it a few months later and thought it was average at best.

Zoolander is great, have watched it two or three times. Tropic Thunder tried to follow the same sort of idea but it didn't really come off for me, made me chuckle more than it made me laugh. Doesn't help that Jack Black is incredibly unfunny.

you and i are the complete opposites on these movies.. thought Tropic Thunder was brilliant and thought Zoolander was a steaming pile of garbage..

that said, i didnt necessarily like TT because of Stiller, more because of RDJ.. not a huge Stiller fan TBH.. like "Mary" and a couple others, but there are so many of his movies that I literally hate

however, other than TT and Shallow Hal, i dont think i've seen a movie that i have like Jack Black in...

Jack Black is whack. One of those American comedians who just puts too much effort. Comedy needs to be loose and natural. He makes it seem strenuous

Black is genuinely funny when he's got good material to work with. Be Kind Rewind and High Fidelity were great. He was terrific in Margot at the Wedding too where he played a serious character. He's showed some range in average films like The Holiday, King Kong and Orange County in the past. The 'problem' is that he mostly plays the same role when he's doing slapstick comedy, and he's neither fat or funny enough to get away with it.

I got through it while reading WSJ, OMIT and emails.
The biggest crime in the world is people approving 100 - 200 million dollar budgets for nonsense like this.

Unfortunately pretty much every form of mass media, and hence mass entertainement, has been infected by the numbers game.

Making a movie? Explosions within five minutes? tick the box. 'Emotional' scene within twenty? tick the box. Affecting story? what's that. Dialogue? Pfft. Movies are ridiculous now but there is still a thriving indie scene. My beloved videogames haven't been afforded the same opportunity since the advent of xbox360 and ps3 and the outrageous budgets involved in making even a mediocre title now. I can't even put in to words my anger/upset at this turn of events.

I've more or less given up on mainstream games entirely for the same reason. Once in a blue moon a Bioshock comes along but most of the time it's just expensive technology wasted on people whose ambitions make Michael Bay look like a renaissance man. I can count the big releases that I've liked in the last three or four years on the fingers of one hand. Can't even be arsed to get truly upset about it since the problem is so deeply rooted. The things I like have so little in common with 95% of the games that people are usually playing that it's almost an insult to describe them as "games". It's like we're referring to different mediums.

Luckily the indie scene got going a few years back when the digital distribution channels opened up, but it's still a long way away from producing great games on a regular basis. Generally the lack of a big audience means that it's hard to break even too, and the distribution channels like Steam and XBL eat up most of the income, so all it has really accomplished is to transfer the bigger problem on to the smaller stage. At least people with artistic ambitions have started to realise the potential of the medium along the way, but they struggle to make ends meet.

Brendan Gleeson is superb in that film, Colin Farrell suits his role too and Ralph Fiennes is hilarious.
Love that film.
Martin McMonagh has a dark and funny take on life.
It's a survival thing if you're Irish.
