To be honest, I just really hate rating movies with whole numbers. That way, a 7.6 film and an 8.4 film are both 8s. I guess I could've used increments of 0.5 tbf, but I prefer to be slighly more specific.

i would have given Blue Valentine a 5 at best.. my wife liked it (she loves Gosling), but i thought it was boring and unemotional..

The acting carried it, in my opinion. Gosling and Williams were both superb.

Blue Valentine unemotional? Ripped through me like a rotating saw, though I did see it relatively soon after I ended my marriage, which perhaps was inadvisable. Great acting as well.

i guess it just didnt get to me like it did/does to some others.. didnt evoke enough emotion out of me (I should have specified). i thought Williams was cold and completely unlikeable and i found Gosling to be the same un-speaking, brooding annoying character he plays too often. While it worked for me in Drive, it didnt in this movie (to me at least).

I have a new film of the year. We Need To Talk About Kevin is absolutely brilliant, beautifully shot and Tilda Swinton is, well, she should win awards galore for her performance. There's no justice if she doesn't.

The way I felt at the end of it all was, put it this way, I haven't felt like that since seeing Seven at the Leeds Odeon many years ago..

Tower Heist was a big dissapointment. I think the most I laughed was at the start of the film when the cinema decided they would play music instead of the sound from the film. At the time we couldn't decide whether it was a trick part of the movie or whether the cinema were cocking up, but it turned out to be the latter.

What is the point of having Ben Stiller in a comedy if he's not going to be acting like an idiot?

Fixed. 😛 This guy made us laugh in Zoolander, Meet the Parents/Fockers, and Dodgeball, but too often it just doesn't come off.

Tropic Thunder, The Royal Tenenbaums ... Stiller does well with a good script. I prefer him in neurotic comedic roles.

I knew I'd left out Tropic Thunder and I'd forgotten Tenenbaums.
I guess I've come across too many movies like Duplex, Museum, Heartbreak Kid, Polly, etc where he's just annoying.

You should watch Greenberg. Possibly his best work since Tenenbaums.

Greenberg is a really good movie, and Stiller is excellent in it.

@qs It's uneven, but definitely has its moments. Feel the same way about Zoolander to be honest.
