Stack of films watched on the weekend:

Repulsion - Polanski 60s horror on sex, rape and psychosis, pretty classy 7.5/10
The Ghost Writer - Another Polanski thriller, really like this film for whatever reason 8.5/10
Breakfast at Tiffany's - filling a gap. Surprisingly enjoyable and I can see why it's a classic 8/10
Mississippi Burning - classic film. 8.5/10
Jane Eyre (Wells and Fontaine version) - surprisingly shit, Welles was plain silly 5/10

Re-watched Inglourious Basterds. I think that with Reservoir Dogs it's probably Tarantino's best film.

Reasons why:

witty post-historicity at every turn with the blended 60s and 70s film soundtrack against the WWII backdrop
a politically sound Holocaust film - one which actually gives Jews some agency, but also manages to despise and sympathise with Nazis at one time
no boring scenes and four or five that are absolutely riveting
several top notch character performances
one of the best films about film around

It's markedly superior to the Kill Bill flicks.

The inbetweeners is awesome. English comedy really is the best in the world.

Agree with you, Burnwinter. One of my favourite films. Contains some truly memorable scenes. The opening scene especially is a masterpiece and the basement scene is incredible too. Hell, the whole film is amazing.

Quite liked Pitt's interpretation of Aldo the Apache myself. Ridiculous character but fun.

holy shit.. Burnsy and I actually agree on a couple movies..

agree that IB and Dogs were Tarantino's best movies (by a long shot, mind you).. thought Waltz was fantastic in IB.. especially the opening sequence.

i thought Pitt was great in it.. he played the character he was supposed to play absolutely great. not much of a Pitt fan, eh Y Va? (I personally think he's a very good actor, Benjamin Button aside)

The English speaking parts of the film just jarred with me.
Those scenes apart, I thought the film was completely absorbing.
Hans Landa was genius.

Ahh British comedy has gone to shit in recent years. When I was lad it pissed all over the yank stuff but now what have ye got? Inbetweeners, Peep Show, The Trip and The Thick of It. Everything else is pants. Bring back the days of Black Adder, Red Dwarf, The Young Ones, etc

Never understood the criticism of Pitt in Basterds. Waltz may have stolen the show, but Pitt was excellent. He's excellent in just about everything he does. Truly fantastic actor.

No love for Pulp Fiction in here? Great film as well.

I thought Basterds was entertaining but nothing special. I think Tarintino suffered from success, he's never been able to capture the brilliance of his early work. Jackie Brown was probably the last really brilliant film he made.

dont think i could disagree more QS.. Basterds was easily my favorite Tarantino film, followed by Reservoir Dogs.. i cant remember another QT film that I actually enjoyed

I liked the characters and the dialogue but something about rewriting history seemed a bit smug or stupid to me. I think the whole film kind of felt like half an idea maybe. Can't put my finger on it but something about its just felt off for me.

You must be a bit of a 'first album' kinda guy Qs. Basterds is a bit polished and stately compared to Reservoir Dogs - which has that whole raw, low budget thing going for it - but nothing wrong with that.

It's definitely smug to rewrite history but it's such a meta film I reckon it's already ahead of the viewer in recognising that it's smug.

I'm not a huge Tarantino fan to be fair ... I've only sort of liked most of his films, e.g. Pulp Fiction was killed for me by too many dickheads quoting Jackson's best lines.

Just watched Win Win. What a brilliant little film. Almost as good as The Station Agent. Thomas McCarthy is a top director. It's such a shame he only makes a movie once every five years.

Charlie Day and Jason Bateman are on my two favourite tv comedies, so i knew i'd enjoy this
