Think it's his third best after Tree of Life and Badlands. I've got a very soft spot for American history though. It grows on you, like everything Malick's ever done.
I liked it. The performances were a bit up and down, but it had a couple of big things in its favour. Firstly (the unnamed) Pocahontas was unquestionably the central figure, secondly the constantly unorthodox, constantly beautiful shooting which seems to be Malick's schtick.
At the outset my girlfriend and I were a bit worried it was veering into 'noble savage' romanticism, but it redeemed itself in the end by revealing a serious romanticism about everything.
@Ricky
I thought Four Lions was really pretty good. But it was a very difficult subject for Morris to tackle, mainly because there's no single proper perspective on 'homegrown terrorism', it's such a multi-faceted thing. That earns him points for making a gutsy film though. I laughed quite a bit and found the ending slightly moving, but I'd only call it a qualified success.
