Finally watched rise of skywalker. Holy shit it was bad. Worst of the 9 movies.

I'd argue it's much better than Episode I and II, but yeah it was awful. When taking into account that it's the finale of a 9 movie series that started 40 years ago it's even worse. The Game of Thrones season 8 of movies.

I think it's maybe slightly more watchable than Episode 1 and 2, but also much worse if that makes sense.

I have nothing but bad things to say about the prequels but at least Lucas had an idea that he committed to. Virtually all of the flaws are because of his shortcomings (and they are many) - as a director, as a screenwriter, as a storyteller, but if you squint you can sort of see the design and how it might have been good in the hands of someone who had approached it like Peter Jackson approached Lord of the Rings around the same time; preferrably someone who actually had a clue about the root causes of 20th century fascism.

I have no idea what the sequel trilogy is supposed to be about by contrast. No one could have made those films better. Their very existence is what's wrong with them, and The Rise of Skywalker is by far the worst one.

Second this, it's great. The best Scandinavian film I've seen.

The should stop the whole series. It’s played out. But Disney will keep sweating their $4Bn purchase. They’ll do some more nonsense like a Donald Glover spin-off vehicle and then reboot the whole franchise in 5 or 6 years.

I don't agree. I think they should stop with the Skywalker story and create something new entirely in the same world. But I agree that this particular story is played out, although I think the biggest problem this trilogy had was that there was no plan and they used two directors who wanted completely different things. It was so jarring.
[spoiler]The first movie playing up the mystery of Rey's parents, the second one revealing that they were nobody, but that's okay because who your parents are or where you come from doesn't matter. That is something I can get behind, but then when Abrams did the last movie he retconned it completely by having Rey be a palpatine. Same with Kylo Ren's helmet. In the first movie he wore it and was a Darth Vader fanboy, in the second Johnson got him to throw it away to be his own person, and then Abrams in the third movie simply had him starting to wear it again without any explanation. Johnson, maybe in too high a degree for some, at least tried to move away from the tried and tested and do something else, but then that last, awful movie happened. [/spoiler]

Both Rogue One and The Last Jedi were really good movies for me, so it's not that Star Wars is played out, but I'm happy that they're moving away from all the established characters. To give them more time in TV shows is okay, I'm looking forward to the Kenobi show with McGregor.

Yep thats the issue. Star Wars needs its own Kevin Feige that has control of the directors. I'd love to have seen what Rian Johnson could have done with that last movie.

The Invisible Man. A horror thriller from the director of Upgrade. Seems to have been received fairly well.

The Hunt. Not lighthearted and not received well overall, but the standard deviation of the reviews is high. This controversial movie about wealthy liberals hunting republicans for sport was cancelled due to mass shootings happening not long before the release and Trump bein outspoken about his disdain for the film. Mostly curious because Lindelof wrote it.

Watched The Hunt. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has fuck all to say about politics buts fun to watch the OTT stereotypes tear each other apart. Funny too. And Betty Gilpin is brilliant in it, I can see her turning into a top action star.

I always spend so much time deciding what movie to watch, some times so much that I end up just watching an episode of a show instead because it gets too late. Now I've started using Plex, so I can filter my movies by umwatched and press shuffle.

Yesterday I ended up watching Possession, a 1981 film by Andrzej Zulawski. It's about a woman that suddenly and unexpectedly wants a divorce, and starts behaving more and more strange for reasons unknown. I have no idea what to make of it to be honest. Is the acting bad or brilliant? I don't know, but it's certainly one of the most unique movies I've ever watched. I reckon people either find the subway scene laughably silly or anxiety-inducing. I'm leaning towards the latter. Had to chuckle when I read that Isabelle Adjani has a child with Daniel Day-Lewis, her performance certainly had some DD-like eccentricity. I'll continue to shuffle, seems like a good way to watch films I'd otherwise never get to.

What happens if you shuffle and it ends up on a movie that looks like it doesn’t suit your taste or mood that moment?

I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. 😆 I have a watchlist of ish 300 movies that I'm pressing shuffle on, so it's not like I can end up with anything. I did skip past The Irishman, it's four hours long and I didn't have it in me to sit through it.

Isabelle Adjani was so freaking hot and talented at that point, she had a run of about five amazing films.

Last two nights: PLANETARIUM, utterly forgettable, tricked into watching it by a friend. Just re-watched THE MATRIX RELOADED, a film I thought was pretty terrible when it came out, but I actually liked it this time around. Shallow as a puddle, very spectacular, impressive action sequences and fight choreography, if you like the style, even by today's standards.

Is that the one where Morpheus slices the tires of a car with his katana and then shoots the fuel tank when it tips over? John Woo would've been proud of that scene.

All I remember from that Matrix film is two ghost albinos with dreads or something. I can't have liked it a lot, because I never bothered watching the last one.

And yeah, I don't often see people as pretty as Adjani in that movie.
