Glad the great trailer was able to sell me on such a fantastic movie! Thought the whole move was strong, but there's a few scenes in the latter half that are oustanding. Really nice pacing, good balance between the characters, and great acting....definitely worth a watch.

Thanks a lot for your recommendation. Watched it last night and loved it. Just the antidote to my weltschmerz from the elections and current global politics. Plan to check out 'Like Father,Like Son' though it might veer too much into sentimental drama for my preference.

I missed this earlier, but nice! If you liked Shoplifters you should look up some of Koreeda's other stuff too. He's most famous for After Life (and it's a good one) but Umimachi Diary and After the Storm are terrific too... not to mention Still Walking. Most things he's done, basically.

Watched Scent of a Woman last night. Not sure how I never heard of it before but damn Al Pacino is incredible in it.

I've seen both Carlito's Way and Heat loads of times, great films. Neither have an individual performance on that level, although to be fair Scent of a Woman is built up to some extent at least of course to promote Pacino's performance in the film. Not unlike the other films though tbf

new star wars was expectedly bleh. i predicted back in 2017 that there was a chance episode 9 would be a repudiation of what episode 8 did, just like episode 8 repudiated episode 7. and that's pretty much what it was. the whole new trilogy is at war with itself. disney whiffed it

finally watched parasite as well, which was worth the hype. excellent movie

I couldn't stand The Force Awakens and I thought The Last Jedi was a ridiculous film, but at least it was a film. I'm not sure what the fuck this clown job was.

It's kinda amazing that Disney managed to make a new trilogy that basically matches the prequels in terms of awkward choices and sheer awfulness.

This is what happens when you’re trying to do too many things at once. Please the guys who will bomb rotten tomatoes. Be compliant with 2019 values. Make tons of money. Oh, and bring in a different director every time. Just sounds like a recipe for nonsense.

Speaking of nonsense. I’m lying in bed with a cold so have 6 Underground running. Michael Bay basically bought up all of Hollywood’s guns and explosions and in Netflix found the perfect distributor for movies that abandon plot, continuity, and dialogue. On continuity, the worst example is a scene during a senseless 17 minute car chase where the radiant Adria Arjona gets blood on her right cheek. Next shot it’s on her forehead. Then it’s gone. And back to her cheek. And gone again.

It's quite amazing how Disney would spend so much money picking up Star Wars and on making a new trilogy and not have any kind of coherent plan for it.

I only went to see this last night as my mate wanted to go and I don't get to see him that often, but fuck it, not again. That was a long sitting.

How money they were willing to spend on it was probably only affected by how much they would profit from these movies, which is a lot.

The problem, Quincy, is after paying $4bn to acquire these rights, I suspect that the calculus has always been we need to make movies that have the broadest possible appeal. From 50 year olds who enjoyed the first movies to teenagers today, satisfying all tastes and politics in between. That’s bad product dev.

Disney took the kroenke method of assuming fans/mugs/addicts will continue to fork over their cash regardless of the product, and as a result they've taken a big hit in terms of quality and economics. The next go around id suspect they will plan things out with more care instead of winging it

Saw Star Wars last night.

The saga is indeed at war with itself, but I appreciate that honesty. The alternative was to pretend the previous film was salvageable and I'm not sure it was.

I'm not even a big Star Wars fan, but walking out of The Last Jedi my thinking was: "How could you possibly provide an adequate ending to this trilogy after screwing up so badly with this film?"

I understood this latest film as an attempt to correct that mistake, and while this necessarily makes it a relatively terrible film, it also made it a lot more enjoyable for me.

Knowing that the film stopped taking itself seriously made it the only Star Wars movie I enjoyed of this latest trilogy, even.

Saw it too. My wife and and I kept turning to each other and laughing. Not in a good way.

There were echoes of LOTR - “today is not that day” - but just done really crappily.

It seems anyone who is alive who was in any of the original 3 films got a go in this one.
