I watched The Cotton Club Encore and oh my god, why did I sit through this? I want to punch myself for watching the full 2.5 hours. I thought it was gonna be about Harlem and have some great jazz music, but it's just a really shit gangster story attached to a bunch of musical scenes (most of which involve no jazz at all and lots of fucking tap dancing) and the black characters get a separate, underdeveloped storyline that is not connected to the main plot at all. How do you make a movie about the segregation era and end up segregating the plot in favour of a bunch of white stiffs?
I've rarely seen a film that fails so completely at everything it attempts, and the acting is just the shit cherry on top. Richard Gere and James Remar put in two of the worst performances I've ever seen anywhere. I'm not even being hyperbolic, how can you be a professional actor and be so bad at what you do? They deserve to be lined up and shot for this. Diane Lane in particular got slaughtered for her role in this, but she's miles better than Gere and Remar even though she's not very good either. Coppola's worst movie ever.
