I was but a stub when Grease came out and God barely had a plan for me when many of the other great musicals came out. They just had catchy songs. I watched Sound of Music so many times in my childhood. Knew all the songs inside out. Bought the Chicago album after watching the movie. Need to see the stage musical. La La Land is just not upper echelon. I will be surprised if people talk about it beyond 2020

La La Land is trash as both musical and story, to be honest.

I enjoyed both start and conclusion when I saw it at the cinema, but the whole of the romantic development just doesn't really work given the critical function it's supposed to have in the plot. You just can't imagine Sebastian as this Gatsby-ish dreamer.

Although I dislike musicals in general, Into The Woods is actually great, but the Disney version sucks. Go figure.

Of course they do. Schools put on student versions of shows like Grease all the time.

It'll get reworked into a stage musical and last about 3 years before it disappears. Its shit and worst of all the music in it is shit. The opening scene on the cars was fun and it seemed like it was going to continue like that then after the first act they pretty much give up the whole conceit of being a musical and play it straight as a romantic drama until the end when they remember its supposed to have songs again.

The movie disrespects its audience and is a standing insult to science fiction and afro futurism. As Dr. Jared Ball points out, we can’t just go make and market another movie to compete with this one. Disney/Marvel Studios put tens of millions into the promotion of this thing alone, and for now millions of people are buying their message. That’s called cultural hegemony.

😆 Its' like that Cinema Sins channel on Youtube, you can find something wrong in anything. Black director? Well, he wasn't a woman. Strong, black women? Well, they took orders from someone. One of the good guys is white. The thing he hates the most about this movie is probably that it comes from the big, bad, world-conquering organisation that is Disney.

I agree about La La Land. Not a single great tune. All great musicals have at least one. It seems modern musicals aren't as interested in the music being memorable, whereas I bet you can all think of a tune from Grease, or Les Mis, JC Superstar, My Fair Lady. Now I haven't seen Hamilton yet - to choose one modern musical at random - but I bet the music from Book of Mormon (which I have seen and which is awesome) will be more memorable than Hamilton. I did see Kinky Boots - music by Cyndi Lauper - and while it was a fun musical I couldn't remember a single tune two hours later.

I like Book of Mormon, it's a lot of fun, but the music is Hamilton is on a whole different level. It's like comparing Avenue Q to Les Mis.

Watched Black Panther.

It’s a good Marvel film ruined somewhat by the hype. Theres aspects of it that I don’t like until I remind myself that it’s just a Marvel move that shouldn’t be taken too seriously. I don’t really get why so many people (the Mrs included, who had no idea it was a Marvel film until the opening credits 😆 ) like this despite not being a fan of Marvel films in general. To me it shows what perception and hype can do for a film.

On another note, while there was the odd chuckle, I thought the film lacked some comedy and lightness to it.

Finally, I’m a big fan of Martin Freeman, but I couldn’t take that American accent seriously.

I watched The Shape of Water last night. It's the best film I've seen in absolute yonkers. Sheer movie magic. It's probably gonna get completely robbed this year at the Oscars. It's too good not to.

Trust Guillermo del Toro to be the one to reinvent The Creature From The Black Lagoon as a feministic love story.

They should have thrown in a nomination for Doug Jones too while they were at it. He's so much better at not looking like Doug Jones than Gary Oldman is at not looking like Gary Oldman.

I've heard so many mixed responses to the Shape of Water. I'm probably just going to have to watch it to make up my own mind.

Red Sparrow is really worth a look in my opinion, having just seen it.

Very mixed bag but a lot of shit critics are thoroughly wrong about it. Lawrence is very good in it.

Fun movie, Dula.
Watched China Syndrome yesterday. A bit disappointed. Perhaps it was very topical in 1979 when it was made, but in 2018 it felt like a made-for-TV movie. It didn’t dial up the tension enough, in say the way Argo did, even though you knew the eventual outcome of that movie.
