Marv, these movies are so different depending on who is spearheading the projects. Look at the Thor movies. Each so different from the others because of the various directors involved. And you see it across the 18 Marvel movies as they feature an array of creative talents. Everything about WW lies in contrast to JL and BvS- the color palettes, the pacing, quality of storytelling, how women are portrayed, etc.

What is even worse for them is they are reimagining Batman not a decade after the Dark Knight trilogy which is still the high point in comic book movie making for me. They should just make a WW sequel and cancel everything else.

He's a great gothic stylist who, if he could manage it, would benefit hugely from a creative partnership with an equally talented developer and screenwriter.

He's like Winding Refn in that he can create stunning visuals but is severely lacking as a storyteller.

Maybe he should try to be more often though. It's really unfortunate that he seemingly has no ambition beyond directing these bland, high profile DC films. His reimagining of Dawn of the Dead was a bold, brilliant work. Maybe it was the only really good film he had in him, but I had high hopes for him.

I'd like Snyder to do a psychological thriller, an exploitation film or a heist film, I think. Get someone else's competent screenplay and work with it. His visual and stylistic obsessions aren't suited for a "cinematic universe".

Mad Max Fury Road didn’t appeal to me at all so I’ve been avoiding it all this time, but it’s actually super entertainment, and brilliantly OTT. The visuals are great, the action is simple and to the point, which makes a refreshing change from long, drawn out and dull fight scenes you get in most action films.

Yeah it's great. Too bad that it seems like Warner Bros. is fucking George Miller over. He made them a blockbuster that won six Academy awards and he still has to sue them for not getting his $7m bonus. He was going to direct the sequel, not sure what'll happen now.

Mad Max Fury Road is an exceptional film by someone with a very pure creative vision working at the peak of his powers with all his preferred collaborators. Great film in my opinion, easily Miller's best too.

I don't think the sequel will pan out, but hey.

Yeah I was a fan after Dawn of the Dead and even 300 at the time. Sucker Punch is one of the worst most self indulgent pieces of shit I've ever seen and Snyder seems to have channelled that as much as anything else through his DC films. He's more of a Michael Bay than a George Miller too.

Darkest Hour was pretty good, but I don't quite see why it's nominated for Best Picture. Gary Oldman for best actor is the only nomination that film should've gotten.

I liked Murder on the Orient Express as well. It's gotten pretty mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Well I finally saw it last month and it seemed like a reeeally long advertisement for an actual movie. DID NOT get the hype!

Also was it just my imagination but it felt like a laugh at the brits..?

[spoiler]It involves civilian brits saving 300.000 soldiers, soldier brits sacrificing themselves for this cause and the commander choosing not to be evacuated because he wants to help evacuate the French as well.[/spoiler]

Watched The Villainess last night. The fight coreography was awesome, even though there was a bit too much shaky cam to hide how ridiculously over the top the action was. The storytelling was needlessly complicated though. The story is told non-linearly so you don't always know what's going on, but still worth a watch for the action scenes.

The main protagonist for one. The guy who from frame 1 to end was obsessed with getting away. I 'get' he is a survivor but so strong and relentless was his desire to escape that it was impossible to relate to the Churchill speech at the end. I swear I almost let out a shocked laugh.

I thought about it and it occurred to me that so strongly the movie wanted to portray the 'intense doom and gloom' situation that the 'switch' to 'heroism' in the end almost felt like a laugh

Watched Thor Ragnarok on the weekend. Pure good fun. I loved Korg, partly for the cheesy NZ accent the director plays up, and partly because Korg, 10,000BC is what we wrote in the front of school text books each time they were handed out.

Not sure I posted what I thought of Dunkirk before. It's a thriller/drama that uses certain techniques to cheat the thrills/drama out of you. It's the only way I can explain the chest pounding track that accompanies someone stocking a boat full off life vests.

Finally got around to watching La La Land. Not a big fan of musical, but how the hell was City of Stars nominated (and won) Best Original Song? There were two much better songs in the opening 15 minutes of the film.

Quincy, everything about La La Land's trophy run just made lose faith in awards season. It just feels to me that some Weinsten-type character spends November doing drinks with a dozen or so influential voters, and then it's decided. One movie will be the Best Picture and that distinction basically enables it to sweep up a bunch of other awards it barely deserves. A good musical should have us singing the songs. We are still singing songs from Grease, West Side Story and Sound of Music. I watched La La Land. Can't remember a single tune.

It just might be a different era with its own tunes which appeal to their generation.
