I thought it was ok too—stylish looking, conceptually a bit old hat, didn't fall down too badly at the end.
Very cool early Gibson vibe in the sets and design—Japan, mesh, camouflage, noir interiors and streets, bare wires, hoodies. One of the better films I can think of for getting the cyberpunk aesthetic, right down to the western gazified Japanophilia of the 80s, pretty much spot on. Which is interesting since I imagine Gibson was among Masamune Shirow's influences so, yeah.
But speculative films about consciousness and humanity really need to nail the inquiry part to work well, and it didn't do that, and leaving aside the need for fidelity to the anime, I think a different story could've done a lot more to unsettle the viewer with its gender politics.
