the humour did felt crow-barred in. i know nothing about the character, so i dont know if they amped up his wise cracking for the movie. it felt very similar to tony stark. visuals were very good, and one of the few movies that's probably worth watching in 3D

I enjoyed Doctor Strange. As you say, it's good escapist entertainment. The first bit of humour actually took me by surprise as it starts off in quite a serious vein. I like Rachel McAdams too, but she was very under-utilised in this.

The movie did threaten to eschew the classic Marvel chuckles for some serious introspection but that didn't last. I'm no Dr Strange fan but I don't think he's supposed to be some wisecracking twit.

The effects though seemed remarkably effortless. The characters always appeared at home in all the magicky chaos.

really enjoyed arrival. it moved at a deceptively slow pace. my enjoyment was linked with the point when i realised the 'hook' of the story, before it was spelled out towards the end. its not perfect and i can see it dividing opinion, but its probably my favourite movie of the year

Doctor Strange was quite good. I'm a guy who enjoyed Transformers just for its special effects, and the ones in Doctor Strange were incredible. I was thinking it'd definitely get an Academy Award for them, but then I remembered The Jungle Book.

Also watched Hell or High Water and True Lies. Liked both of them.

hacksaw ridge is quite watchable. It could've been a unique one with it's own niche if they could bring out the moral issue or how people with extreme practices can still work together(a guy who wants to go into war without any weapons here for instance). Instead they made it a bit of an underdog story focussing on the main lead. Nevertheless an amazing story. Scenes of war are very striking too. Moving.

Watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople with the family on the weekend. Really enjoyed it. Sweet and amusing Kiwi flick.

Seen some great films old and new, lately.

The Handmaiden is a must see in my opinion. Felt like a return to form (maybe?) for Park for mine, but after seeing it, perhaps I need to go back and re-watch Stoker and see if I really did dislike it.

Also: Alexander Nevsky (so good!), and Network (amazing writing).

Also re-watched Good Night, and Good Luck and was struck by how shitly liberal films like that, or like Charlie Wilson's War, or Bridge of Spies now feel in the Trump era. Fuck that Sorkin, Weinstein, Clooney, Tom Hanks noise. I bet Syriana has aged really badly as well. You called it wrong, Hollywood.

Does anyone use https://www.taste.io? Kind of like Tinder for movies. I rate random movies awful, meh, good, amazing or "haveb't seen" and it recommends me movies based on that. Apparently I should watch Whiplash and The Intouchables.

You should definitely watch Whiplash.

That seems a pretty good site, I've nearly gone blind rating things but the stuff it recommended to me that I have seen was all great.

I was of very little help to the site giving only two non-awful answers but it still gave me Mad Max: Fury Road and Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, two movies I love. Probably some luck involved but I was very impressed.

It's interesting. After spending ten minutes on ratings it was producing what seemed to be excellent recommendations, but it was also failing to match quite a lot of movies that I love. But I'll be checking out the top matches I haven't seen.

You can click "I've seen this" on the top recommendations that you've seen, and when you refresh other movies will take their place.

My profile is now at 50% complete and the recommendations are getting progressively worse. It's saying that I just have to watch 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' with a bold 100% recommendation, followed by Whiplash and Mad Max. Most of the films on the extended list I've not seen and there's a reason for that, they've never really appealed to me.
