Fair enough but you'd still expect films that appeal to you. I mean I really don't see how Hot Fuzz is on any of my lists, it's one of the last films I'm ever likely to watch and I don't see how it got on there based on my ratings.

Funnily enough I've updated again and now Wilderpeople has vanished 😆

I can't stand Simon Pegg but Hot Fuzz is one of the few exceptions. Terrific film.

Can't stand him either, which is why I can't imagine it being great. He ruined Star Trek.

He ruins most things he touches, but I think it's because of the oversold geek poster child persona he has crafted for himself. He's basically cast as the Jar-Jar Binks of every film he's starring in, whether it's Mission Impossible or Star Trek. He's seemingly oblivious about it too, which is why he's writing think pieces where he's criticising the “dumbing down” and “infantilisation of cinema” while trying to promote his own stuff. Pot, kettle, etc.

I think Hot Fuzz is a rare example of where his main features work to his advantage though. It draws its strength from the contrast between Wright's modern, stylistic directing and the traditional, mundane setting of the little sleepy town. Put Pegg in that environment and let him deadpan jokes for two hours and he's golden. Put him anywhere where the jarring contrast isn't the whole point and he's an unmitigated disaster.

Most of his non Edgar Right comedies are brutal too. And Spaced is overrated. I still like the Cornetto trilogy enough to give him a pass on all the other stuff though.

He's unbearable in everything he does - except the Cornetto trilogy which is brilliant.

Do yourself a favour and watch Hot Fuzz, otf!

Hot Fuzz is great. It's streets ahead of the rest of those films as well, but it's definitely good. That's where all those guys peaked, I doubt they'll ever better it.

Went to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which by the way is an absolutely terrible title imo. I'm not a big fan of the Harry Potter movies, but I thought this was better than most of them. The story was kind of lame, but I enjoyed Redmayne's performance and the chemistry between him and Dan Fogler.

I saw Arrival yesterday with the missus and my 10 year old daughter, who both love sci fi stuff. It's a very enjoyable film which has you thinking and guessing a bot. it does go a little bit Dr Who towards the end to wrap everything up, which I think some of you here will hate. Ultimately I enjoyed the plot device - my wife and I were discussing it for a while afterwards which doesn't often happen as most films just tell you what to think.

I like Amy Adams though and she's very good in this. It's really her with Jeremy Renner supporting and Forest Whittaker hanging around a bit.

Liked Arrival a great deal in its way, strange cocktail of ethnopolitics, white America, the philosophy of language, science and the Rapture.

It's an interesting contrast to Sicario (Villeneuve's previous film). A comparative essay on the two would be good. Bodes quite well for the Blade Runner sequel, too.

I enjoyed the central performance too, and as you say Asterix the final fifteen minutes or so were a bit hard to take. Apparently the Ted Chiang short story it's based on has a lot more fascinating exploration of the science fiction aspects of the premise.

Yes, i saw 'Arrival' as well yesterday and i definitely think this is the best film to come out in 2016 so far (that i've seen ofc). Never seen Amy Adams give such a detailed performance before and Villeneueve, as always, is fantastic in his direction and photography. Really liked the way it looked, sounded and was acted. The story itself was believable and interesting. One of the "must see" films of the year!

I turned off Sicario after 40 minutes I think, but I like Villeneuve's previous work. I've been looking forward to Arrival but it doesn't look like it'll show in cinemas over here unfortunately.

I think it premieres December 2nd in Sweden.

Got myself tickets for the world premiere of Rogue One. The website went down for one and a half hour when they released them, almost gave up.
