Continues with a bike chase through the streets, and then a foot chase in a market and along the town rooftops, culminating in a thrilling hand-to-hand combat in an apartment bathroom. Great pacing

Matrix lobby scene. You know the one. Neo goes commando on a bunch of agents.

Matrix Reloaded lobby fight scene that leads into a garage battle with the twins and then that epic highway chase where cars are destroyed and agents defy physics.

I'm sure you guys can think of other sequences you always look forward to seeing. Let's see if anyone picks a John Woo special. 😆

#3 is my favourite. So fricking awesome.

The scene in Mission Impossible 3 on the skyscraper in Shanghai is incredible too.

Hah, same with me, only I thought Gareth Evans was attached to direct Godzilla.

In the Heart of the Sea - pretty mediocre. The whale scenes were cool, and kudos for trying to make it something more than a monster movie, but it didn't work for me.

Legend - not the best movie, but worth watching just for Tom Hardy playing both the main characters.

Ok, Raid 2 really was good. Definitely feeling a Johnnie To influence in the plot and characterisation, and not as compact as the original, but loaded with merits.

I love the way Evans does martial arts, I don't think it's exaggerating to call him a master. There are so many shots where the camera's motion mimics and viscerally emphasises the impact of a blow. The more shocking moments of violence were apportioned to great effect as well—like the moment when one character shoots forty bullets through a motorcyclist's visor at point blank range. There were a couple of weaker or tonally suspect aspects, for instance I probably could've done without the hammer and baseball bat twins.

No, they were quite uncool and gimmicky, I thought. The balance of tone is so crucial in these sorts of films (I'm not going to revisit my comments about John Wick yet again!).

Their fight choreography was among the least convincing on show too—constantly doing easily duckable chest-height lateral strikes.

A bit late to the game, but I finally watched two brilliant movies: The Theory of Everything, and The Revenant. The former is one of the most emotionally engrossing movies I've watched recently. The latter has the most delicious cinematography. I felt like making postcards from so many shots. If you haven't seen them, don't wait a second longer

The Revenant was hard to sit through. Leo was great, still my favourite actor, but the story, or at least the way it was told, was terrible. Felt no emotion whatsoever.

Speaking of Leo, I finally watched The Wolf of Wall Street. I've been avoiding it all this time after someone told me it was crap and after noticing that Jonah Hill played a significant role, but I it was great fun and a well told story.

Watched Room last night. Fuck me that first hour was intense. Very good film and great performances from the two leads.

I sat down to Room without knowing what it was about. First hour was brutal, and the whole film was a very emotional experience for me.

I loved Room, but don't know if I'd ever want to watch it again. It just strips you bare, doesn't it?

Sounds like another Dear Zahcary to me. Can't be dealing with that. I slapped a ten on it on IMDB then promised myself never to watch it again.

Just watched Labyrinth of Lies, about the attempt by Germany to whitewash its own history in the aftermath of the holocaust and World War 2. Interesting but unfocused film about an aspect of history that I didn't know much about. Definitely worth a watch for the way it taps into the German public's state of mind prior to the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople—highly recommended.

Could have been just another quirky contemporary comedy drama, but managed to tap into the epic, exhilarating solemnity that children of the 80s will remember from fantasies like The Last Unicorn or Neverending Story. Very good film, perfect for teenage kids too I'd say.

Late Phases. Excellent film about werewolves picking off the occupants of a retirement home until they encounter a blind army vet who fights back. Nick Damici is always quality. The bloke deserves a bigger career.

Yep, saw it a couple of weeks ago. A bit like The Goonies but with only 1 kid. I took my 10 year old and she really enjoyed it. I love Sam Neill - such a reliable actor.
